Smokes and the Gas Station

I bought a pack of cigarettes today…

::looks over shoulder to make sure the SO is not around::

…and I put the whole thing on my gas card. They put it all down as gas. The total price was the same, but they upped the gallons to make it work out.

Are they being shady? Or is this just an accepted practice?

Smells like spilled gasoline to me…for you it doesn’t make a difference, but for the station owner/oil company, I’m sure that misreporting how much gas they’ve sold violates some part of their arrangment.

Besides, you shouldn’t be smoking anyway.

I would think the only advantage/disadvantage to this arrangement, (depending on the point of view) is that you probably didn’t pay sales tax since the advertised price of gasoline is supposed to include all taxes. This is good for you but sorta shady for the clerk to put the store owner in a position to pay a shitload of fines.

BTW- Buy a diesel powered car or truck and start running offroad (nontaxed) diesel fuel. It costs about 2/3 of the regular cost. (Just thought I would mention this since I HATE paying taxes.)[disclaimer] This is illegal, so when you buy the fuel, put it in a 5 gallon jug and when you get home pour it in the tank.[/disclaimer]

Offroad fuel is also called “reefer fuel” and is sold at most truckstops.

I think I can answer this. I work at a gas station where I sell cigarettes also. I don’t know how similar their register is at said gas station but at ours what we do is ring up gas, cigarettes, soda, etc. and cash that through. To make things easier we just take the total dollar amount and run it through the POS as a gas sale. The credit sales have no effect on what we sold in terms of gallons of gasoline or cigarettes, it’s just to balance out the stuff we cash through.
