Smokes

I’m sorry, did you have an actual question that you would like answered or contribution to this thread other than howling out “Cite?” as if a member of Alouatta palliata with an articulatory defect?

Stranger

You’ve made an absurd claim about how and why people quit smoking.

MODERATOR NOTE

+1 for erudition.

-1 for form.

Criticize the post only, not the poster.

Carry on.

samclem, you’re gonna be giving Miller a run for his money in the “clever moderating” department if you keep this up

I must say, if you are to be an Alouatta, you should endeavor to be a jaunty Alouatta.

He’s the one I aspire to emulate. I’m probably too old to catch him in the race.

Thanks for this.

E-cigs are not recommeded by any medical professional that I can find. In fact a recent study showed that the vaporized chemical are a cancer compoind in and of themselves. I would love to quit smoking, but it seem that there’s really no EASY alternative.

That MAY be true (cite?). But I can tell you this… I don’t cough and hack up black shit from my lungs any more.

Some studies, like this one, indeed do claim that nicotine by itself is a carcinogen, but they used amounts that were nearly lethal (they used a dose equivalent to the LD50).

The only way to quit is to quit.

I smoked for 40 years - pretty heavily for most of that time. I used Chantix to stop smoking about 5 years ago. It’s since gotten a bad name for various reasons, but it worked wonders for me in about 3 weeks. Breaking the physical addiction to nicotine only takes a week or so, however, smoking entails more than breathing in nicotine. It takes much more time to change the behaviors associated with smoking.

Even though I’ve been a non-smoker for 5 years, just recently, after finishing up a writing assignment, I found myself reaching…I was like - are you kidding me?! In other words, there will always be a good time for a cigarette!

One thing you have to know about nicotine addiction before you quit. Nicotine is an emotional dampener. That’s why we tend to smoke whenever we experience strong emotion, good or bad. We smoke when we’re happy, sad, angry, nervous, etc. During the first few weeks, you will find it difficult to control your emotions. Warn your friends and family and even your employer. This is when most people backslide.

Another thing to know about nicotine is that it binds to certain sites in the brain. When you stop smoking, those sites slowly lose their sensitivity. However, one cigarette will wake them all up again! Once you decide you’ve smoked your last cigarette, truly try to make it your last cigarette or you’ll be fighting a continuous (and usually losing) battle. Learn the word NOPE (not one puff ever).

I’m a medical professional, and I recommend them. So do the family doctors I work with. Sure, it’s worse than not smoking at all, but it’s a heck of a lot better than smoking cigarettes.
