When did women start being warned not to smoke during pregnancy? Does anyone remember this not yet being the case?
My mother was advised in 1959 NOt to quit smoking. The Doctor said it would help keep her weight down.
FTR, he also advised her to drink wine or beer while nursing, to help her stay calm!!!
It’s obvious to me that dragonlady was shaking her head when she posted.
As am I. Smoking is dangerous. Period. If you’re pregnant, you are putting your unborn child at risk.
Even I know that.
Yes, but does anyone know exactly when women were advised for the first time not to smoke during pregnancy? Can anyone remember when the first advisories came out (shocking a few women who were already smoking while pregnant, I can imagine).
My Mom quit smoking for each of her pregnancies, and her first was in the mid-50s (I’m the baby, born in '72).
Ack! Reminds me of a friend my age whose mother was prescribed “diet pills” during her pregnancy because she was gaining too much weight. This was in the 60’s when diet pills were benzedrine.

From here.
It looks as if warnings first appeared on cig packages between 1979 and 1982, but I didn’t see anything specific to pregnancy.
Ugh. Not only a bad link but bad info…sorry. Warnings appeared in 1966.
