hey since my guest membership expires tomorrow i figure ill ask one last question to the teeming millions. i was watching the movie ‘lets go to prision’ and the main character would always smoke in his cell, its pretty much the same deal in any prision movie i can recall. but my question is that do they allow smoking in prision and does that mean they get to keep lighters/matches with them? also wear do they get their cigarettes from?
different places have different rules. IME, prisons in MI allow smoking(designated areas), my local jails do not.

Some do, some don’t. There are other factors at work too. Some prison jobs might involve work outside of the prison itself. It could be that riding on a trash truck for pickups allows smoking while on the job and would be one of the most sought-after jobs in prison.
It depends on the place, as already mentioned. FWIW I’ve had a couple of buddies (thankfully I was always stupidly lucky) go to County jail and they say there is some sort of currency system in place where you can get cigarettes, though at much higher prices than outside the walls.
Lockups that allow smoking will also sell you smokes. That and people can send you a limited amount each month. As for lights, I’ve heard that the smoking areas may have what looks like a fixed car type cig lighter mounted on the wall. Perhaps a guard will light up your smoke as well, if you are in yor cell but don’t count on it. Lighters are routinly smuggled in.
