Hmmm. Yes. It appears I have at least one other major point to concede which is that this October surprise does not appear to have originated with the Democrats.

By tomorrow the pubbie spin machine will be saying that he really said “send me a picture of your *elected Pennsylvania * congressman”.
Here is what I think is truly outrageous:
- They kept Foley on the committee that oversaw sexual predator laws even after knowing he was doing something innappropriate.
- They did not share warnings with Democrats on the Page committee.
- They did not warn pages about Foley if they worked for Democrats - like it’s OK to abuse kids if they are Democrats.
Not sure about #3 there, Dan. So far as I recall, no pages at all were actually warned, except by other pages in their community of hotties. So there wasn’t any issue of selective negligence.
For the record I pronounce my ass thoroughly-kicked, my ignorance taken to school, and that it was done with humor and without venom.
Now I would appreciate it if we never mention this again.

If the facts had been as he described them in the OP (a single relationship which only became sexual after the kid was of age), then the Studs case would have been more analogous and the charge of hypocrisy would have had more merit.
But now he’s admitted the facts were not what he thought they were and that his OP was based on false assumptions. I say cut him loose. He made a mistake.
Let him repair to the river, and there perform that Ancient Tasmanian Ritual of Self-Abasement, accompanied by a Chorus of Bitter Virgins, intoning dirges of Woe and Humiliation.

Nitpick: It’s two D’s – Studds.
And no matter how often you hear his first name pronounced “Jerry”, it’s wrong. Hard “G” sound, like “Gary”. This despite the fact he’s named for the remote ancestor whose poloticized districting gave us the term “gerrymander.”

Scylla, your ability to concede is one of the reasons that I remain one of your admirers even though we often disagree.
As bewildered as I am by Hastert’s lack of action, I would hate to see him step down considering who would be likely to take his place.
But I wish that he too had the grace to concede that he mishandled the situation.
Cynically? The Democrats, buncha yutzes that they are, still haven’t given us a reason to vote for them. The choice is between the Live Boy party and the Lame Slug party. I just hope the Live Boy party continues to implode for three weeks, because they’re worse than the Dems.
That means that I hope Hastert holds on for another week, resigns next Friday, and House Republicans are split between “outsider” idealists who want to clean House and elect leadership without baggage, and folks who think they’re entitled to leadership because they’ve been there so long. I hope it paralyzes them into November, and that the sleazy useless Democrats win by default.
