Perhaps. I think I’ve seen multiple white dudes right here on the Straight Dope who repeatedly insist that they want to vote Democratic, except that Democrats keep harping on transgender rights, institutional racism, etc. These are the folks I’m talking about who don’t simply want the Democratic platform to contain economic justice issues, they also want it to exclude justice for minority groups.
(Edit: I think I lost the thread a little bit when I said it was only conservative media sources–sorry for that. There are definitely these white-male-supremacist folks who still remain in the Democratic party. I’d much rather keep them, and jettison their sense of superiority; but if I have to choose between issues of equality and their votes, I’m gonna choose equality).
Well of course some of those folk are just disingenuous. And some might not react so badly to what they see as harping if they felt that their problems were also being taken seriously and not treated condescendingly. Yeah the silent and understood by the rest of us “too” that is part of Black Lives Matter needs to be stated explicitly for these people who are increasingly getting the unintended message that theirs do not.
That condescension that sends that message is on full display in this very thread BTW. No not as SlackerInc and the GOP propaganda machine claims, but still in a dismissive and insulting manner. Basically “I not only don’t feel your pain, I don’t give a fuck about it ya whiny sack.”
It’s tough to separate the message from the messenger. SlackerInc is a self-described “paternalistic racist” who has argued, rather passionately, that the evidence favors black folks having a genetic predisposition toward lower intelligence than whites. It’s not surprising that he would face some dismissal when he puts forth an argument that progressives need to be nicer to white males. If the message has value then he’s not the one to make it.
Further, it would help if the message were formulated in a way that comported better with reality. I listen to political and policy podcasts from sources definitely left leaning (Vox), probably somewhat left leaning (538), and fairly progressive (Crooked Media). I honestly don’t recall hearing anything that involves sneering or jeering or otherwise being nasty towards white males in particular. Neither do I see it on YouTube, where I mostly watch a number of pop culture channels. Hell, even pop feminist stuff like Feminist Frequency doesn’t contain what I’d call demonization of white males. What’s he listening to?

Well, just like how Conservatives prefer to listen to other Conservatives telling them what Liberals think*, Conservatives spend a lot of time telling each other what they believe Liberals are saying**.

I’m not angry. I may get temporarily angry about things, but I don’t spend my days looking for it or listening to media designed to create it.
I’m also not angry at Conservatives in general. I pity them, living in fear and nursing their anger. I’ve been there, decided that wasn’t healthy and I wanted better.
So you can see my words in response and assume that I’m as angry and pissed off as you conservatives - part of that business of attributing to your enemies all of your own faults - but at this point I’m just sad that so many of you spend your days getting worked up about lies and insisting that reality is something other than what it is.
And that people will keep popping up accusing us on the left of neglecting them and not caring about them and saying this will cause them to vote Republican. Because if you’re seriously going to vote for those policies because you think Liberals are being mean to you, then you were never actually going to vote Democrat.
It’s a shame that the concensus seems to be that the sneering doesn’t work. It’d be simple to make a Republican twitter account and sneer even more sneerily at everyone.
It’s quite possible that this is not a case of actual jeers or sneers being posted.
It’s possible it’s a case of posts that reply to self-identified white males with a lack of what those white males consider to be ‘proper’ deference.
For example, if a white male posts an opinion about women-who-are-menstruating, and a woman posts back something like ‘you really know nothing about this,’ then that would be defined as an attack on his maleness (and a sneer). Or if a white male posts an opinion on black hairstyles, and a black person posts back something like ‘this really isn’t your business,’ then, again, this could be defined by the white male as an attack on his whiteness that constitutes a sneer.
In actual fact there were no sneers or attacks coming out of nowhere–though the white male may well claim them examples of ‘constant attacks’ and the like. In actual fact, the white male was not greeted as an expert on menstruation or on black hairstlyes, and he experienced that lack of deference to his views as attacks.
But of course if someone posts links to large numbers of actual out-of-the-blue attacks on white males from reasonably non-fringe sites, then I’ll take back this theory.

Do you honestly think that if the races were reversed, that wouldn’t be a sneer or an attack on the commentator’s “blackness”? I can’t imagine you do. The fact is, despite how real white privilege is and despite how “punching down” is pretty obviously less cool than the reverse, you can’t expect humans to fully accept that and just take their lumps quietly. Some white guy working the midnight shift in the chicken packing plant with all his coworkers hooked on oxy is never going to buy it. It’s not irrational even if it’s not enlightened or educated.

For those not aware, this is a guy who gave Obama a million dollars in 2012, and he just rips into Trump on every episode. In fact, he actually got sued by Trump over a joke he made implying Trump’s mother was an orangutan.
If you nitpick that this is about a (straight, cisgender) white woman rather than a white man, you’re really missing the point. This is part and parcel of the same kind of thing, and it’s certainly not going to come across well to the white guys I’m worried about losing. Not to mention that white women, seemingly inexplicably, gave the majority of their votes to Trump in 2016—so we could use improvement there anyway.
Note too that those are mainstream newspapers, not random people on Twitter or fringe websites, attacking Amy Schumer. And she made her facepalmy apology on the freaking View!
It really is worst in media coverage of TV and movies, and that’s admittedly something I follow more closely than most people do. But newsflash: there are lots of people who follow it closely enough to pick up on this shit! And many of them may not follow other kinds of news closely enough to know the policy reasons they should still stick with Democrats despite all of this cringe-inducing and exhausting PC nonsense.
Who “attacked” Schumer? So some people talked about her movie and had some issues with it. I like Maher’s show, but he’s an incredible snowflake about criticism from liberals… he just can’t take it without these weird wildly-hyperbolic rants. It’s okay for people to talk about Schumer’s new movie, and talk about the problems they have with it. They’re not saying Schumer needs to go away, or she’s terrible, or anything like that, just that they have some disagreements. Maher blows this kind of thing way, way out of proportion routinely. It’s okay for liberals to sometimes be critical of other liberals.

As I’ve noted before, Maher is a smarmy asshole. The fact that I agree with him on a topic or two doesn’t make him less of a smarmy asshole. He’s more looneytarian than liberal, anyway.

Not for the character being white, or straight, but for an interpretation that it used fat as shorthand for ugly? I have no idea if the critics are correct or stupid. No idea if the movie is funny or boring and preachy. It did not get great reviews but its done well enough in the box office it seems. Maybe Maher is an investor?
