For quite a while, I’ve been seeing advertisements for, and references to, a smokeless tobacco product called “Sneuss”. It’s represented as being something new and innovative in the way of nicotine-delivery options and much safer to use than smokes, chew or old-fashioned dipping snuff.
The thing is, I can’t figure out what the difference is (if there’s any at all) between this new Sneuss snuff stuff and regular old dip like my brother and his friends all use (ie, Copenhagen or Happy Days-, the stuff in the flat round cardbboard “can” with a tin lid), or if the whole thing is just hype on the vendors’ part. They’re both moist tobacco that you put between your cheek and gum and just sort of “rub” until you’ve got your nic fix, and spit out the juice, aren’t they? I’ve looked on several Sneuss-shopping sites just from curiousity and they don’t tell me anything that differentiates their product and the one that’s been around forever.
Are there any Sneusser Dopers who can straighten this out for me (I’m not looking to take up the practice, BTW, I’m just curious to know what distinguishes one from the other)?
Generalizations from a non-dipper (but very familiar).
Dip - you take a big ol’ pinch and stick it in your bottom lip. Spit out all the juice and saliva that it causes.
Snus - you take a pouch and put it in your top lip. No need to spit.
It might be confusing that there is “regular” dip sold in pouches as well (like Skoal Bandits). These are used just like regular dip (bottom lip/spitting) but they don’t get tobacco stuck in your teeth (and are generally disdained by hard core dippers).
Looks like a duplicate thread, so I’ll just repost in this one:
You don’t spit with snus. You just tuck it in under your front gums (or at least that’s where I put it, upper gum, near canine) and just leave it there until you’ve had your fix. I’ve been doing it on and off for about 15 years after picking it up from some Scandinavian friends. I don’t like the Marlboro or Camel products here (they have an odd sweetness to them). The General (which is a Scandinavian brand) is my choice, but I prefer loose snus to the portioned kind (which is what they’ve been advertising in the US.) The ones I really like I have to mail order: Roda Lacket or Gotesborgs.
Many years ago, my supply of snus ran out so I tried some Copenhagen. I had never done dip before. I nearly vomited because I tried to swallow the juice.
Sneuss, eh?
“You can buy both from Sam-I-Am,
But you should spit them out before having green eggs and ham.
One can make you hork,
The other is Swedish - Bork Bork Bork!”
Snus comes in loose form as well, but the general rule is that it is more likely to come in pouches. If you put the pouches side by side, the snus is dry, the dip is slimy. That’s the General (heh) rule.
I have seen claims that snus is better for you, but of course neither is a healthy thing to do.
