The only reason I’m starting this thread is the Weekend Update almost throw away skit where the guy had won the office pool and showed up in a top hat and monocle and teased Fallon & Fay about losing…
Was that funny to you? I found it very funny – unlike say the Phone Booth skit – but my pals – who usually closely mirror my taste did not find it particularly funny – while 13 hrs later I can smile thinking about it …
Overall was not a great SNL – doubt any clips will show on the 40th anniversary special
I thought it was really funny too. “Oh but what have we here? It’s the $10 bill once owned by Ms. Fey! What shall I extravagantly waste it on? A cup of coffee and two scones at Starbucks, perhaps? Or maybe a cab ride almost all the way back to my apartment!” It could have been a little shorter, but the length wasn’t horrible. Remember him throwing the two crumpled bills up in the air à la Scrooge McDuck? That was hilarious.
Overall, though, I thought Weekend Update was sub-par. The punching bit was really dumb, and the interview with the Iraqi Information Minister was uninventive.
Romano’s monologue, by the way, was an almost verbatim rehash of a standup set he did on an HBO special years ago. I happened to catch a rerun this week, and then I was half-waching SNL and noticed that I had lierally JUST heard the exact same routine earlier in the week.
Lately I’ve found that SNL has been really bad, and the only thing I ever tune in for is Weekend Update (for the eye candy, not the jokes) and sometimes the music guest if it’s someone I like, like last night. I did watch Ray’s monolouge and for once it was actually funny, and then I muted the tv until music time, and then watched Weekend Update — did Tina put caramel in her hair? I’m still deciding if I like that color on her or not. Anyway, that was good as always…I’m not sure if getting turned on by watching her get punched 5 times means I am a seriously twisted person, but that was great. I decided to actually give the show a chance…and then they blow it on me by doing a Kattan sketch (him SINGING no less) right after commercial…
