When I was a kid, I had a record called ‘Snoopy vs the Red Baron’. It had two different songs about Snoopy fighting the Red Baron, neither of which was the one you typically hear at Christmas time, although it sounded like the same singers. There were other songs on the record, completely unrelated to Snoopy:
Does Your Chewing Gum Lose It’s Flavor On the Bedpost Overnight
Gerry the Giraffe
Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport
and others I can’t recall. Does anyone know of this record and where it may be available? I’ve tried searching various music sites, but all I end up with is that one Christmas song.
Sounds like you might have had a compilation LP, or an LP of cover versions. Here’s the original Snoopy Vs. the Red Baron LP by the Royal Guardsmen on CD (together with one of the follow-up albums), but it doesn’t have those other songs you mention.
Wow, thanks for the link – we used to listen to the Royal Guardsmen in the under 10 set like crazy. I even still have one of the LP’s in my trunk of fondly loved, but unplayable LP’s. I may have to get that one for X-mas this year.
The album I had came with the three Snoopy vs. Red Baron songs on one side and Liberty Valance, Penut Butter, Bo Diddley, Alley Oop, and Battle of New Orleans among other memorable tunes on the other.
I think I had a Dr. Demento cassette tape with at least some of those songs when I was a kid. Chewing Gum, Alley Oop, Battle of New Orleans and Snoopy anyways.
I think it’s called Whacky Hits or something like that and it’s either a K-Tel or Ronco release. I think it’s got a green cover too. Try yardsales and your local Goodwill. It’s one of the records i run across fairly regularly.
There are at least three different versions of the Snoopy vs The Red Baron LP. The one I have has The Royal Guardsmen (all three “Snoopy” songs, “Ally Oop”, “Bo Diddley”, “Li’l Red Riding Hood”, “The Jolly Green Giant”, “Peanut Butter”, “The Battle of New Orleans”, “Liberty Valance”, “Simon Says”, and maybe a couple others) on one side and The Vince Guaraldi Trio (a collection of music from all the Peanuts specials) on the other.
It had a cartoon drawing of the Red Baron on the cover, but not Snoopy, and it wasn’t a green cover. I believe the background was black, and I know it didn’t feature “Battle of New Orleans” either. I’ve searched for many years and all my inquiries ever seem to produce is that Royal Guardsman album or some compilation featuring that song. I’d really like to lay my hands on the same record but I guess it’s not available any more.
If we’re talking covers mine had a red background, with Snoopy’s dog house in prominent display; Snoopy in flight gear to the left of it; The Royal Guardsmen (cartoon likenesses) poking around the top and right side of the dog house.
I had a 45 of the Royal Guardsmen’s version. Ah, what memories!!
Now for the kicker–does anybody else remember the “B” side of that record?–it had a chorus (maybe the title, too) “I needed you, baby” , repeated over and over again.
Probably the worst song ever written.
I had at least one version of Snoopy vs the Red Baron – it must have been on one of the two novelty LPs I owned around 1977-78, *Goofy Gold * or Dumb Ditties. Many of the other songs mentioned in this thread were on those albums as well, but let us not forget “The Ballad of Irving” and “Martian Hop.”
I’m guessing that none of them relate to the OP though. Batso may be thinking of this album, (once owned by my childhood next-door neighbor or maybe my brother): http://www.wriukids.org/wish/unusuallythick.html

You know this whole thing begs the question: Just what the heck was the connection between the Royal Guardsmen and Snoopy? They made three novelty songs (and recorded some interesting tunes: Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and Penut Butter are my clearest memories.
BUT WHAT brought that about? What dark forces conspired to make this happen?
