Snowing tree fluff

Reading this BBC article about the falling pukh of the Balsam Poplar in Moscow reminded me of the same phenomenon in US cities.

Is this caused by the same tree, or are there other species that cause delicate, drifting, accumulations of white fluff reminiscent of a giant pillow fight?

I believe you’re talking about the Cottonwood. The cottonwood is also in the poplar family, so it’s likely a close relative of the russian tree.

Whoops, hit submit – it’s late. Yes, they are related (PDF).
