For me, the allegorical elements were so hammy that they almost came back around full circle to nuance. What I appreciated most was the genuine uniqueness of the premise and execution. Maybe it’s typical of Korean cinema, but I’ve never seen anything quite like it. A bit reminiscent of the first time I saw “Brazil.” (Not that I’m placing the two films on equal footing.) The rave party car at the end was a tedious cliche but the grammar school scene with Allison Pill was a gem.
