The guy who inspired this thread and this thread is apparently sitting in a Canadian prison for possession of kiddie porn. What he was doing in Canada (and what part of Canada he was in), why he had the kiddie porn, and how he got busted, I’ve no idea. It is somewhat surprising that he would have the stuff, he’s certainly not the kind of person I would suspect of having the stuff. One of my college roommates supposedly got busted with the stuff, but it wasn’t really surprising in that case.
There are a lot of pedophiles/child pornographers/etc. who are spectacularly good at not arousing suspicion.
Man, isn’t that the truth. A fellow that my husband and I went to college with, who became a high-school math teacher, was recently busted for having a lengthy affair with one of his male students. The affair started when the student was 13 years old. Our friend’s wife had no idea that it was happening. It sure threw us for a loop. Nobody in our social circle ever had a sneaking suspicion or weird vibes or anything to suggest that something was going on.
It looks like some other power did it for you! 
I was surprised to learn that one of my co-workers had been arrested 2 years prior to my meeting him for kiddie porn. He seemed normal enough, and we even gawked at the hot (20-something) females that walked in together. Never would have guessed that a few years before that, he was…well, yeah.
The sad thing is, they just got around to putting him in prison a few months after I met him.

Not to get overly personal or cryptic or anything, but just how well did you know him, and all that?
(Most predators who target children, whether for interpersonal assault or for porn, are very good at not getting caught or arousing suspicion.)

Well, he’s gay, so Playboy and Hustler don’t interest him at all. He’s been married for over ten years now to a guy he met over a BBS, and presumably they have a healthy sex life (I never asked about that, because, well, I don’t want to know about it, ya know?) and I know one of his ex-lovers (who’s 6’4" blonde haired, blue eyed and about 350 lbs, he’s certainly not child like).

Look … I don’t mean to be a dick or overwhelm you, but when I said this:

I meant it.
Those who are vets here or who otherwise have really good memories have been told more’n a little about my immediate and extended family.
Let’s just say that having a healthy/exuberant/whatever adult sex life necessarily means nothing when it comes to what you want to do to kids/watch being done to kids.
If you (or anyone else) want more information, I’m happy to provide more details in e-mail. I just want to fight the impression that child predators are obvious.
Yeah, I know a great deal about pedophiles, and trust me, when I say that it was a bit of surprise for me to find out that he got busted for it, but I wasn’t surprised when someone else I knew got nabbed with the stuff. There’s generally subtle behavioural cues that you can pick up on, which this guy didn’t give off. AFAIK, his only fetishes were bondage and furries. He was heavily into Tom of Finland comics as well, nor was he of the sophisticated type who’d be into something and keep it secret. He was always wanting to show people how smart and “artistic” he was, so he never missed an opportunity to tell you about his shamanistic experiences, oddball movies (Kenneth Anger and the like), and music that he’d “discovered.” This guy has a colossal ego, you know the kind where when he walks outside, it causes a total eclipse. If he was into something, he had to tell you about it, so that you could tell him how cool he was. :rolleyes:
Which, in turn, makes it colossally easy to hide anything he doesn’t want revealed.
But whatever. Seeing it in one person doesn’t mean you’ll see it in anyone else; some people are obvious and happen to be pedophiles, and some people are very, very crafty and happen to be pedophiles.
Hell of a lot more people in the latter category, in my experience. I don’t like it, and it makes me thoroughly uncomfortable at times (as with reading that recent pit thread, until it was revealed that the … being in question was being insincere), but 's just how it is, from what I can tell.
