So anyone playing/play Valiant Hearts: The Great War?

I’m playing through it right now and I have to say, this has been the MOST IMPRESSIVE game I’ve played for the last few years. I didn’t really expect it to be all that much, but it’s been pretty incredible.

It has a very engaging, intriguing, and amazing story with great characters.
It’s one of those that you play if you like a game with a very good, deep, emotional story line. One where, over the course of the game, you come to care about the characters, you laugh with them, you cheer with them, you cry with them.

The moments you go through in the game have all been really powerful, emotional-wise.

It’s got a lot of puzzles in it, but I’m not sure I would classify it as a puzzle game overall. More like an interactive tale that allows you to control the characters during key moments for awhile.

The graphics have been very, very impressive and stunning as well.

I very strongly recommend people try this game if they haven’t yet. It’s not too hard to make you have to repeat over and over (I think I’ve died only once or twice so far, and I’m about halfway through it) but it’s not overly easy either.

In short, it’s just the right degree of difficulty, I find…and I’ve really been impressed with what the game has thrown at me so far. A plus gameplay, story, characters, and overall rating so far.

If anyone else is playing through it or has played through it, feel free to leave your own opinion.

I read that the letters are actual letters written by real people from the time period.

I haven’t played it yet, but it’s totally on my “Must play” list.

Thank you for the good review; I’ve been interested in it for a while, and this only helped persuade me.

I haven’t picked it up yet but the trailer for the game is fantastic. I am worried about how emotional it may end up being.

I heard the story and atmosphere was amazing but the gameplay itself was rather lacking. Thoughts?

I’ve played through about half of it. I’m enjoying it, but

  1. I wish it was less puzzle-y. I care enough about the characters and situations that I don’t really need “find the lever so you can move the crane” puzzles. The puzzles aren’t bad, but they feel out of place.

  2. There an evil German supervillain at the heart of the plot. Again, I think there’s plenty of story opportunities to be had just in the normal unfolding of World War I without adding in a comic book villain.

Basically, I wished they been brave enough to make a game that was a straight-up character study of people in living through the horrors of the Great War. That said, it’s definitely worth playing.

The first part is true…The story and atmosphere are amazing.
As for the gameplay, it’s fairly good, but not great/amazing/all that.

Like the Hamster King said above, the puzzles are a little out of place… and also, I find the puzzles eventually start getting justtttt a little repetitive. Like, I’ve pulled enough mechanical handles to last me a lifetime of games by now. Every other puzzle involves pulling a handle of some kind…

…but other than that, it’s not terrible. It’s still very fun (at least to me) and I’m still highly enjoying it overall.

Some of the ideas and concepts are really genius, I think. The way the game is presented is the true amazement. Very well done.

Nearing the end now and this game just gets better and better. It continues to impress…as one of the levels I’m playing right now is so ingenious in how you have to get around the place. It’s really clever, I’m finding.

Anddd, just finished it.

Wow, what a great ending. You’ll need tissues, though.

This game was incredible.

I really hope to hear others thoughts as they play through it and finish it.

I’ll definitely pick it up in December.

I totally agree. Amazing game and great ending!

I finished it today and liked it quite a bit. I hope they go on to make a WW2 game and tell the story of some people from that war.

When I think of WW1 in media, I think of two things. Blackadder and Paths of Glory. I’m really glad that they made a game that walks through the war.

I did not find the puzzles out of place. I kept telling my wife I was really glad they had a lot of puzzles and other tasks to keep you busy while the great story unravels around you. I have played story-intensive games before and I like the ones that have some good game play as well.

I hope the company continues to make more games like this one.
