The significant contributors to California’s GDP is in order: international trade, agriculture, then energy.

The reason international trade is the largest is because of the ports in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oakland. Most of the goods coming from those ports end up on trucks or rail cars traveling east to the rest of the US. If California seceded from the US, there would be strong support to build competing ports in Oregon and Washington to bring goods into the US, to avoid going through the country of California.

Similarly, if California were to secede, there are other places to grow fruits and vegetables (South Texas, New Mexico) to displace crops grown in another country. With the recent advances in fracking technology, energy demands from California’s oil production could easily be displaced by other areas in Texas, Pennsylvania and North Dakota.

Yeah, but we’ve got the Kardashians, Facebook, and porn production. What will the rest of the country do without those life-giving items?

California could function very well without the US. We’d make a fortune leasing the Naval bases to King Trump, and that’d offset any Federal funding losses. They don’t want to pay our price, then they can park their ships in Arizona.

Well, I don’t have any cites handy but I believe most if not all countries carry debt so I don’t think it would be a big deal. A benchmark I’ve heard is debt over 100% of GDP is a bad sign. I just googled and it looks like California debt is about 18% of GDP, which seems well within limits. Not that I am in favor of all these bonds that Californians like to pass. It’s not a tax increase! It’s free money! Not true, we’ll be paying it back plus interest for 30 years, and where does that money come from? OUR TAXES. But I digress…
