So Called "Phantom Number One Songs" From Billboard

Whatever. It only went to #32.

Assuming you’re referring to “Valley Girl,” that’s kinda the point. Had the single actually been available for purchase at the peak of the “val” fad, it might have performed significantly better on the charts. I doubt that it would have had a shot at reaching #1, though.

I could be wrong but I think Alanis Morrisette’s “You Oughta Know” was another album cut that got so much airplay if could have been a “Phantom Number One.” I believe later a live version of the song was later released as a single (perhaps as a “B” side) and it made the Top 10.

This was in the mid 90’s when the sales of singles had pretty well dried up and the most accurate and dominating indicator of a single’s popularity was airplay. That was the main reason why they changed the rules.

According to allmusic, “You Oughta Know” charted to #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks in 1995. It also made it to #3 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, which I find quite impressive, since the mainstream rock stations I’ve listened to rarely play songs by female artists (possibly because they usually don’t “rock” enough, or whatever…that’s a tangent for another topic).

My SIL has a 45 of Stairway to Heaven, it is a 3½ minute chopped up version of the original. I have been trying to talk her out of it for years but she won’t budge.
