So, China has a strategic pork reserve

I thumbed through the last of last week’s Economist and found that little snippet;

I know its quite serious and there’s a good reason for a strategic reserve. But it just sounds so, dunno, silly. Hey, MPSIMS, you hear about all sorts of cold war nonsense like a nuke filled with chickens, its good to hear some warming silly stuff once in a while :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey! That’s not kosher! How dare they keep all those tasty piggies in reserve and off people’s plates! Damned commie bastids!

Mr. President, we must not allow a pork bacon gap!

The pork reserve was designed by the Chinese government as a means to make sure the country can feed itself during shortages without having to resort to unholy alliances with local warlords to gain access to their private stock.

Restaurant menus to this day reflect the lingering stranglehold of the poultry despot General Gao.

A couple of days ago ther was a segment on the radio about increasing Pork prices in China and what it may mean for the west. It generally sounded pretty bad, because the artificially low exchange rate in China is what allows us to buy all their manufactured goods for next to nothing. If a food staple pushes up prices in China we may no longer be getting our $10 toaster ovens, angle grinders, MP3 players, tool kits etc.
