Apparantly someone going to be very rich tonight. Because of a minting mistake there has been produced a Sackie coin with George Washington’s portrait on front. A goid coin with Washington on the front and the dollar eagle on back.
There is only one reported coin of this (which is being auctioned) but who knows, there could be lots more out there.
We discussed that coin in chat last night…most of us are skeptical. It doesn’t seem like such a mistake is even possible, for many reasons; the two coins should be stamped on different machines, for one thing. Plus the new gold dollar is larger than the quarter and thus shouldn’t even fit in a quarter stamper, which makes the perfect centering of the Washington portrait very strange indeed.
I suspect that it’s not so much a mistake as something purposely done by a U.S. Mint employee that escaped out into the public.
Check this out from Coin World Online. They say that it has been verified. I think the guy is making a good move by unloading it before anymore are found. I would doubt that only one coin made it out into circulation.
