I don’t like the term “chickenhawk” for lots of reasons. An opinion is an opinion, its validity has no reference to the character of the advocate. A Carmelite nun’s opinion on military intervention is just as valid as the opinion of a lifer.
I know men who went to war just to go to war. I’m perfectly serious. Their daddys had gone to war, their granddaddys had gone, it was their turn. One was a cousin of mine, who wrote to me from the very middle of The Shit, to paraphrase: Dear Cousin: if you have to move to Canada, live in an igloo and eat whale blubber, don’t let 'em get you…"
And as I mentioned before, the lefties I know who are veterans are radical sumbitches, more often than not.
A “chickenhawk” is more than somebody who simply ducked his own responsibilities. It’s someone who’s been active, even strident, in calling for war from a safe remove in either time (as in past the age of service) or distance (as in from a country where such a decision need not be faced) so that others in a less-safe position may be forced to face the same life-or-death decision for themselves. The “chicken” comes from lacking the courage to do what he demands others to do, and the “hawk” is from the willingness to cause the deaths of other human beings as other than a last resort. Now, Sam, is it dawning on you why the term applies to you?
Now, perhaps we can move on to the subject of just who, **Sam **, you are referring to by your repeated denunciations of something you call “the left”. Is it anything more specific than “the boogeyman”? Got any actual names you can provide who’ve said the things you say “they” did?
