Is this the show based on Terry Goodkind’s stuff? If so, I never read it but I’ve heard it’s just awful.
I’m with you, brother. I managed to finish Wizard’s First Rule and I’ll not go for the others.
I couldn’t finish Wizard’s First Rule. I think I only made it through the first few chapters. I liked Legend of the Seeker though.
As an exercise in masochism last year I read the entire series in one go. Kind of like masochism, eventually the endorphins kicked in and I kind of got into a groove with it.
Right after that I learned of the TV series and checked it out but in the first episode too much was changed from the book’s set up (and I was burned out) that I never returned for the second episode.
Now that time has passed, I should probably check out the show again.
We had quite a few threads about it when it was still on. I was really disappointed it was canceled.
Love that show.
It was too bad it got cancelled. I was looking forward to season 3’s Big Bad being the chicken who is not a chicken.
Should I dare to ask if the Wizard had a Second Rule?
Only one was mentioned in the first tome.
Near the end when they’re trying to stay afloat with the ratings they crank the S&M to 11.
Good times.
Was that a ratings ploy or just source material? The books crank the S&M to 11.
I’ve read the first 4-5 books or so in the series before giving up on it. The first book or two was great, it turned a lot a fantasy cliches on their heads. But it got to be too contrived, every book after that was just a variation on the first. Goodkind would come up with some stupid reason Richard and his gf (forget her name - Kalah? Kalan?) had to separate, then they would spend the rest of the book chasing each other. All the while frantically tying to stop the latest doomsday device from destroying the world. Ehhhhh.
I quite liked the television series though, most of the casting was pretty good, special effects and storylines were fairly well done. I think I’ve seen less than half the episodes though, and can’t say if it held up over 2 seasons or not. There were a lot of elements (plot devices, characters, storyline elements, etc) taken from the books but it wasn’t based on a specific book AFAIK.
To recreate even one of the books would probably span 7-8 seasons, they’re just massive bricks of books. A friend and I used to joke that Terry was building a house out of them, hence the length of his novels. He must be up to at least a 50 room mansion by now
That never happened…
…he actually kicked her in the jaw.
Probably both, there is sex in the Game of Thrones books, but it’s never as gratuitous or nearly as graphic as the HBO series.
I thought it was a decent little fantasy show, but the one thing that totally didn’t work for me was the costuming for the Sisters of the Dark. They came off looking like a gang of angry belly dancers. I wouldn’t been able to take them seriously even as they killed me.
Each book introduced a new rule that related to the theme of the novel. If you press me I can probably name the first half in order.
Do I have to give up my SDMB membership for admitting that?
Well, thanks to this thread, I’ve blown a couple weekends on this show (halfway through season 2). Fun stuff, nice fight’n and a hack’n. The guys Kahlan confesses have a future lifespan of what, 40 minutes? Just long enough to reveal badguy’s plan before getting a sword in the back.
