So how much should I expect to pay for a bespoke blazer?

So I bought this cheap polyester “tweed” field blazer on deep discount at Urban Outfitters a few years ago that’s turned out to be one of the best fitting, most flattering jackets I’ve ever owned. It’s perfect in nearly every way (except for the cheap fake fabric). I’ve worn the hell out of it, and it’s beginning to show its age.

I’ve looked around for a replacement, and I can’t seem to find anything comparable off the rack. To the point where I can piss away even more time and money shopping around, ordering online and returning ultimately unsatisfactory garments, etc, or I can just pay a tailor to measure me, tear the old jacket down, and build the Pythagorean ideal of jackets in real Harris tweed.

I expect it’ll cost more than I’m used to paying for a garment, but I have no idea by how much. Any clues?

Alternatively, if anybody can point me to where to buy a

blazer off the rack that I can have resized, I would also be in your debt.

My guess would be about $450-$550 depending on brand, size, materials, etc. Your best option might be to get your current jacket sized, then have a duplicate made. Here is a place that makes bespoke tweed jackets. They might be able to get you what you need.

Hmmm. Not bad at all - that’s actually pretty close to the price of a quality blazer off the rack.

I recommend mytailor.com, from whom I’ve bought a shirt and suit so far. Very pleasant to work with, and I look bloody fabulous in my suit. (My minor gripe is that I don’t show any cuff when wearing the shirt/suit combo; I’ll have to make my preferences clear when next I deal with them.) Looking at the website, Harris tweed jackets start at $699 (plus shipping and customs). You could go up from there with things like custom linings and so on, of course.

In the end, it’s not bespoke like Saville Row with multiple fittings and all that, but it’s a pretty solid value, IMO. Arguably comparable to what you might pay for a decent suit off the rack plus alterations, depending on how much altering is needed.
