Did I ever tell you the story of a rag-tag bunch of maverick atoms who went on to form a universe?
*Yes, I know it makes no sense. But it fits with the vibe!

My God! You’re all right! Joss Whedon is such a hack! I have seen the light!
Arrrrgh! Stupid me not knowing how to use stupid sigs and messing up my own stupid post!!! I’m not worthy to suck the sweat off Joss’s balls.
Serenity was way better than I expected (not a huge fan of Firefly). It was particularly fascinating watching it, as I did, right after Alien Resurrection, written by a much younger Joss Whedon. To see his themes at two different levels of maturity and polish.
The conveyance was the cave, and they travelled via continental drift.
:: Props for originality. ::
Joss also has writer/story editor credits for Roseanne
One of The Firefly Episodes Never Made–we meet Jayne’s family.
Surely, Roseanne Barr could be his sister? A bit young to be his mom–so we can’t thank her for That Orange Hat. But it would be fun to see her give little brother Hell.
Sooooo…
Anyone going to the Browncoat Ball in San Francisco this weekend? It starts today and goes until Sunday. I’m going to the ball on Saturday night and I’m so excited! A chance to mingle with fellow Browncoats who like to dress up and party! Woot! I bought myself a sari just for the occasion.
On the internet, no one can see you blush.
I thought we had agreed that the rest of you would stop making that particular pun, and in return I would release Ann Coulter unharmed rather than feeding her to my makos?
No-one told me this, so I’ve already watched the movie (and liked it a lot) without seeing even a minute of the series first. Is the series ruined for me, or would it be worth hunting it down (it was never broadcast here)?
I think you’ll enjoy the series even more - I saw the movie first and now, whenever SciFi plays Firefly, I watch it.
I watched the entire series through Netflix over the summer and absolutely loved every minute of it… (I am in love with Inara, BTW.) The movie was also fantastic, especially when River went all bad-ass at the end.
Mildly confusing but “The Train Job” did a pretty good job of Defining the Universe for Dummies.
Priceguy, absolutely NOTHING of the series is ruined for you by seeing the movie first.
I wouldn’t say seeing the movie first ruins the experience of watching the show. However (spoiler boxed for those who haven’t seen either yet): Remember Shepherd Book from the movie? He’s an important character on the show and it will make you miss him terribly knowing his eventual fate. As for Wash, just grab the box of kleenex now. That man did not deserve his fate!
True dat.
BUT, since “Firefly” was the Greatest Series Evah! why was “Buffy” merely Pretty Darned Good? I know Joss claims he threw his heart and soul into it…
In all seriousness, *Buffy *is eight or nine times better than Firefly. Of course I understand that your opinion doesn’t parallel mine on this, but the wording of your question makes it seem like settled, objective fact that *Firefly *was better than Buffy, that I felt I had to remind you that this is not, in fact, settled, objective truth.
I’m pretty certain that the wider consensus–still acknowledging that this can never be anything other than opinion–holds *Buffy *higher.
YM, of course, MV.
(As a serious–overly serious; self-righteous even–self-styled critic of TV and movies, I truthfully consider *BTVS *to be the second best TV series ever, after The Singing Detective, and above NYPD Blue and The Sopranos. Personally, I don’t put Firefly in the top 25. Personally.)
Well, of course Firefly isn’t the greatest series ever; that’s clearly the Aaron Sorkin era West Wing. But Firefly is superior to Buffy because Joss had a decade to hone his writing skills in between the two series’ pilots.
Yep, you’re right, we did agree to that. Guess that’s it for Ann Coulter, then.
I would say watching the series first gives the movie much greater emotional force; but if you’ve already watched the movie and liked it, there’s certainly nothing that will have “ruined” the series. You may experience some bits of tragic irony that were not there for those of us watching the series the first time around.
