…and also the world’s greatest hangover cure.
Amazon sell them!
If you are going for dvds go for The Office and/or Pride and Prejudice. I just recently got hooked on The Office. Holy hell, it is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in my life! I was cringing and laughing at David Brent at the same time. Just genius. (:
Only if you’re a maiden aunt.
The shop is in Lawrence, I see. Now even more reason to go to Larry-town. Let’s see, Yarn Barn, Brits, the Birkenstock store, that quilt shop that I can’t remember the name of, then to eat at that little Greek restraunt. Plus any other of the cool shops there on Mass.
Day trip!!! Yay!
Well, I’m an aunt, anyway! I love them more than lime Tic-Tacs. And I really LOVE lime Tic-Tacs.
Come to think about it, I have no idea. Haven’t bought any there yet.
jjimm – thanks for the correction. So far, the only Cadbury’s I’ve really loved were the fruit & nut ones sold domestically. But then, I love Hershey’s too…
Re. DVD compatibility – I’d guess that the shop would get a lot of returns on merch if they sold Region 2. The USA is NTSC-1. (A mnemonic device to remember this would be, “USA – number 1!”.) :o
I would get some lemon curd and orange curd. Oh, you can buy those at a regular grocery store too, but you’ll feel so much more refined if you get something British.
They seem to have a much larger jam and marmalade selection than we do too.
How about Scotch eggs, if they have them?
Can you get an Englishman for $200?
Get a jar of those Van Smirren Cockles. Also kind of an inner child thing.
And don’t forget to get some Jelly Babies. They’re good!
Bear in mind that this is all comfort food for depressed, homesick Brits…designed for cold miserable days and hangovers, not as a daily diet.
If it were me, I’d stock up on the following:
Food & Drink
Lemon curd (nice on hot buttered toast)
Branston Pickle (good with cold chicken in a sandwich)
Ready Brek (like prridge, but without the lumps)
Bisto (yummy gravy)
Heinz Tomato Soup (it doesn’t taste of tomatos, but it’s nice anyway)
AERO (bubbly stuff inside, very nice)
Bewley’s tea (only if you like your tea strong though)
Ovaltine or Horlicks (nice bedtime drinks for the elderly and small children, or people who feel elderly or childish)
Ribena (nice made with hot water to keep you warm, or added to cider or beer-added to cider AND beer it makes “snakebite and black”…not recommended)
Lucozade (hangover cure or mixer for vodka)
Other Stuff
TCP (if they don’t have that in the USA you’re in trouble, it’s good for sore throats, acne and as a disinfectant…smells terrible though.)
Fairy Liquid ( slogan: Hands that do dishes can be soft as your face, with mild, green, Fairy Liquid!)
Atrixo Hand Cream (my mother swears by it…mostly because it’s cheap and smells nice)
Radox muscle soak (it works)
Pookah-Irish Cadbury’s do make a dark chocolate…sort of, it’s called Bourneville. It’s not Green&Black’s, but it’s nicer than Dairymilk.
Had a comedy TV night recently, we watched Little Britain and League of Gentlemen, I was thinking that they wouldn’t be allowed on US TV. In the case of Little Britain, that would probably be because they wouldn’t understand Vicki Pollard’s “no but yeah but no but”, besides Emily, Bubbles, Lou and Andy would just offend people…never mind Royston Vasey.
(I apologise if I’ve just lost most of you.)
Is the store you got the certificate to Brits, in Lawrence? If so, I’ve been in there! Buy tea, as recommended, they have varieties of Twining’s I could find anywhere else, like Lapsang Souchong. They do have DVD’s and videos, both for sale and to rent, so they have to be US playable. Candie’s, crackers, biscuits, many many kinds of jellies, jams, marmalades.
It’s really a great store. If you have questions about the stock, I don’t think they have a website, but I could get you their phone number, if it is Brit’s and it’s not on the certicficate. Let us know what you get!
I love Brits! We make the trip from Independence every six months or so, depending on the financial weather. My hubby’s Scottish & we stock up on some of his faves.
Do yourself a favor, and take a cheap styro cooler with ice, because Brits has a small freezer section. You MUST try the Irish Back Bacon. But get a few packages, because you’ll never eat “regular” streaky bacon again. Get a couple sticks of Black Pudding too. I never in my life imagined it would be good, but it’s essential to a good fry-up (English brekkie). Try their Bangers and sausage rolls, pork pies, etc. Do NOT bother with the frozen Yorkshire Puddings. They suck ass. It’s better to make your own (right, jjimm?)
From the non-frozen end: Tunnocks Tea Cakes are quite yummy. Pick up a Cadbury’s Milk Tray (an assortment of chocolates) the strawberry filled chocolate is the best in the box. And for Og’s sake, get a peppermint Aero bar! Bisto is the best damned gravy mix on the planet. We’re out at the moment (waaaah). Get some Cadbury Bournvita (malty hot chocolate mix) it’s wonderful. If you have the guts, you could try a Shweppes (?) Shandy-- lemonade and beer mixed. Blech!
By the way, Brits shares a door with their French/Euro sister store, whose name escapes me. I’ll bet the owner will let you combine purchases from both stores towards your gift certificate.
$200 gift certificate to Brits… I’m jealous!
I forgot to add:
if you’re into candles and the like, trek north on Mass to The Wax Man (first store at the north end). They make their candles in-house, and it’s a cool store.
Looking through their catalogue I can recommend:
Branston Pickle - great in sandwiches, it’s a staple food here. It a variety of vegeatables in a sweetish picled sauce.; It’s lovely.
Ginger nuts - ginger flavoured hard biscuits - great dunked in tea.
Hob-Nobs are a Chav’s biscuit.
Coopers Marmalade - no other nation makes this stuff. I couldn’t survive without it - it goes on hot buttered toast. (I’m intrigued to see Robertson’s Marmalade on the site - not because it’s an inferior product, but because of the golly thing. I thought that might be a bit much for the yanks).
Cockles - these are cooked pickled shellfish. Very much an acquired tatste - I ilke them, but can see why others may not (They are called “baby clams” in the rest of the world)
Colmans Mustard - Look no further. This is the stuff. It’s a lot stronger than what passes for mustard in the USA though. A little goes a long way - have it with cold meats.
Daddies Sauce - sweet savoury sauce. If you can get your hands on some real bacon - not that frazzled nonsense you lot eat - this is the match made in heaven for it.
Tinned cusutard - gorgeous, just gorgeous. Have it with spotted dick (which is nicer than it sounds)
Mushy peas (these are marrowfat peas not gardens peas). I like 'em, others don’t.
Barley Water - much more refreshing than ordinanry squash.
I was wrong. Brit’s does have a website.
And the store next door is Au Marche.
I live in Topeka, and I have to go all the way to Lawrence to get my Lapsang Souchong tea at Brit’s.
Brits is indeed the store linked to in the OP
Didn’t know that it was Cadbury’s making that. Never tried it, I have to admit. Too busy munching Green&Blacks. Yum! Actually, I get my day-to-day chocolate from Liddle but Green&Black is fabulous for that special chocolate moment.
Lucozade is a great suggestion too. I didn’t see they had it.
Robertson’s have been Golly-free for some time, now. They currently seem to have some deal going with The World of Roald Dahl, whereby you collect tokens from the jars to exchange for badges (much as they used to with the gollies).
And I’ll thank you to take back that outrageous comment about Hobnobs.
