So, I got an extra 90 bucks today.....

…from Social Security. But I have no idea why. Has anyone here that is also getting S.S. gotten an extra amount? Can anyone shed some light on this?

It’s a nice little “windfall”, but the way the government operates, it wouldn’t surprise me if they demanded it back 2 months from now because they “made a mistake”.

I am on SS disability and would welcome and extra $90. Hell, we haven’t had a cost of living adjustment in two years. But that’s okay because gas is going down, groceries are less expensive and even though I keep my thermostat on 79 my electric bill was only $290 this month.

Only??? How much is it regularly during the winter months? I live in Oregon in a house that has zero insulation, heat with an old gas heater that is probably the most inefficient thing known to man, and my highest gas heating bill was $120.

As far as the $90 goes, I’ve looked on the S.S website, through the news and I can’t find anything. I wonder if it has something to do with the $250 they claimed they were going to send out in lieu of a C.O.L.

I just checked mine & my mother’s checking accounts and neither one of us got any extra money, which sucks because I goofed up yesterday and will be short by $3 when the rent check arrives. I don’t know if the bank will pay it or bounce it, but no matter what they will charge me, which is going to hurt because California just cut my (and my mother’s) SSI payments because of the on going state budget crisis. This is the fourth cut in two years (total reduction of $77 a month - that hurts) and there have been no COLA’s for the past two years either.

Former Social Security employee here; you should be getting a letter explaining the payment within the next week or so. The priority has always been to get the money out first and the explanation later. If you’ve worked and paid into Social Security during the past year or so then the additional money could be due to a benefit increase to give credit for those earnings. This is the time of year that the system does an automated review for those increases.

If you don’t want to wait for the letter you can always call the toll-free number (800-772-1213) and ask. You’ll have to wait until Monday to talk to a live person, though, and be prepared to sit on hold for a while.

Make sure you save it, 'cause it is an error they will catch it and want it back. Or if it’s direct deposit, just take it back
