It looks like I will have to go to Tokyo for business late October. Due to scheduling etc., all I will have for myself is one day (a Sunday).
What should I do? My hotel is downtown Tokyo. I like Cities and walking around. I do not want to spend time in an art museum, but if there is some sort of unique Japanese history museum, that would be cool.
There is much of interest in Tokyo. I would suggest buying a guidebook. This site seems to list museums and other sights in the city. The Asakusa district is very interesting, as I recall, and the Emporer’s Palace is in the city, as well.
Most tourist and shopping places are open on Sundays, so you shouldn’t have a problem with things being closed. If you want to check out electronics, anime or other geeky stuff, Akihabara is the place to go. To observe the bizarre rituals of Japanese youth, Shibuya is your first stop, followed by Harajuku and Yoyogi parks. Asakusa is a good “traditional” area, with plenty of things to see and souvenirs to buy. Ueno has a lot of museums, an ok zoo, and lots of shopping areas (more like ‘market streets’ than the upscale department stores and boutiques of Ginza and Aoyama/Omote-sando)
