So, I met Haley Osment.

He wasn’t in The Phantom Menace! That was Jake Lloyd.

Another vote for Saved! being an awesome movie, and Culkin is good in it.

If you want to see a gem of a movie, check out Second Hand Lions.
He is the poor relation to two texas uncles, played by Robert Duvall and Michael Caine.

This young man is one to watch.

Thanks for sharing, Richilam.

And believe me, there was never any risk of Haley playing Harry. His name came up when Spielberg’s did - as in, briefly - but Rowling wanted an all-British cast because she wanted one, not because she was barring the door against dead-people-seers. Haley didn’t want the role, either, so it’s all good.

And yes, I highly recommend Secondhand Lions.

But it should have been Haley Osment! And since it wasn’t, it’s Haley’s fault the movie sucked!

Damn you, Osment! DAAAAAMN YOOOOOU!

He did audition for it, and this was before Sixth Sense was big, and strangely George Lucas did not recognise his potential, and instead went with a stilted portrayal.

Oh wait, that’s what he always gets, no matter who he directs.

Yeah, yeah, all you nitpickers. Still, you have to admit, he was pretty good as Tyler Durden in Fight Club.

I’m glad to hear he doesn’t appear to be a spoiled celebrity brat. I always liked him. I hope his brush with trouble was an aberation. He strikes me as a child star with the potential to maintain an acting career as an adult, as long as he doesn’t throw it all away on stupid stuff.

AIUI, Phantom Menace was cast first, and the timing was such that if Haley had been chosen as Anakin, he would not have been available for Sixth Sense. So that silver lining definitely had a cloud.

Also, what Lucas got right was that Haley was just too teeny-tiny to play a kid who lived in a junkyard. Jake Lloyd was at least physically right for the role. Who knows? Some people read well, but can’t sustain the performance for the length of production, especially a complex production like TPM. Perhaps there were other candidates who would have been worse. Perhaps Lucas just casts for type. Perhaps no one could have lived up to expectations. Or, perhaps, beyond all that, Lloyd still can’t act.
