So, I need a new "wireless solution"

Personally, I hate the term wireless. It sounds archaic, kinda like the horseless buggy, y’know?

Anyway, aversion to the term or no, I need a new cell phone and, ideally, a new provider. At the moment, I’m using AT&T’s nifty, if overpriced, regional advantage plan which gives me a whopping 400 minutes at $49.95. Sad ain’t it? But at the time it was the only phone to include Hawaii, California, and Las Vegas in its “home” calling area, which is good because I’m a Hawaii kid transplanted in Los Angeles, with a chronic gambling problem. It also has free long distance (but who doesn’t, these days?).

Anyway, between moving home and finally passing the one year “yay, I’m free!” mark on my contract, I’m ready to jump ship.

So, what I need is: free LD, at least 600 minutes (with at least 250 daytime). What I’d also like is the same “home” calling area and/or free roaming.

I also need a new phone. I’m currently using a Nokia 5190 (or so) and would like something a lot slimmer/smaller. It’d also be nice if it did a lot of cool stuff. There’s a phone that’ll play MP3s for your ring and bring up a JPG for your caller ID, so I hear…

When I came out here, the best deal I found was Cingular (formerly PacBell, which explains a lot). Home coverage is all of California, plus Las Vegas, much of Washington and Oregon. I have the 300 minute plan which is $40/month, and it came with either free nights and weekends, free mobile to mobile calling, 150 extra free anytime minutes or, um, something else, I forget. Plus, any plan over $30/month includes free long distance from California. I took the 150 extra minutes and am using the free long distance to call home to Philadelphia often, and since my old plan was 200 minutes and I always came in less, I think I got a good deal.

Their plan perks, however, change monthly. But for coverage, I did my comparison and found Cingular to be best.

Also, try point.com - it’s a free online cell phone plan and phone comparison site. It’s GREAT!

Thanks for the tip Esprix. Unfortunately point.com doesn’t cover Hawaii yet, so I guess it’s one more month of AT&T until I can find what’s available to me. But, hey, can’t win 'em all, right?

Hawaii? Get a national plan, then - that ought to cover it.
