In 1960, Adolph Coors III was shot in the back in a bungled kidnapping. The murderer was an escaped convict (for another murder). After a nationwide manhunt involving the top levels of the FBI, he was captured and convicted of murder and kidnapping.
In 1960, you’d expect this guy to get the death penalty, right? Such a high-profile case. And he’d murdered before. Nope, he got life in prison. He didn’t even get life without parole.
He was paroled after 18 years. Ages 32-50.* That’s stunning. I suppose the point of parole is that the prisoner is rehabilitated…but for such a high-profile case, that just seems very…progressive?
*He lived for another 30 years.
