So if I buy a 'Honda FCX" where do I get my hydrogen from ?

Not that I’m actually looking for a new car right now, but I see the hydrogen powered Honda FCX is on sale California (well actually for lease, and given the fate of Chevy EV1 leasers I’d be pretty skeptical about being an “early adopter”).

If I were to lease one, where would I fill it up ? Are there hydrogen filling stations around I’ve not noticed ?

Here’s a map

Well, if the jackasses who designed the damned integral tank hadn’t decided to go with a proprietary coupler, you could have gotten your gas from any commercial gas supplier. I understand that Airgas is purportedly going to make sure that all of their locations have the proper adaptor just so you can tank up there instead of their little ‘gas stations’ giving you a hell of a lot more options…

There’s also the question of how the hydrogen was originally obtained. Hydrogen can be gotten from methane, but the process produces CO2 as a by-product. Assuming the CO2 is released to the atmosphere, this won’t help prevent global warming.

You can also get hydrogen by using electricity to break down water, but then where did the electricity come from? If it was generated by burning coal, for example, you are still putting CO2 into the atmosphere.

Wow three in the whole of the bay area, no wonder I’ve not noticed them

There’s always Jupiter. A whole, gigantic planet practically made of the stuff. And it’s right down the block, cosmologically speaking.

Yeah, I was gonna say–it’s the most common element in the universe, how hard can it be to find some?

Actually the second most common. Right after stupidity.
