Yes, that’s correct. I’ve got no money… at all. I owe a lot more than I’m worth. I always knew people were supposed to be broke in college, but this has gone too far. I’m in the hole… big time. At first I laughed as the debt piled up (trying not to stress, you know), but now to top things off, I owe more money to even more people. I am officially very stressed. Umm, I think I’m done. Just needed to get that out.
I know how you feel. I am sort of in the same boat. The difference being that my debt was earned not by schooling (which actually is costing that much due to scholarships)but by my evil former insurance company decided not to pay for a doctor that was covered by them. It took me so long to convince them that he was infact covered by them and that that was why I picked him in the first place. That company made me cry on several occasions. I finally caved in and ended up paying for it with my credit card, which was a BIG mistake.
Now I am in a lot of debt, and am more stressed then I have ever been.
Yeah, Life sucks right now. I figure it can only get better.
My cash probs aren’t (entirely) from school. I get loads of financial aid (as I am quite poor), but… sigh … ok, I’ll stop. I’m done yacking about this. I’ll just watch the bills pile up and laugh. Ha! I’ll pay off debts when I’m ready.
As a closet anarchist…
I must point out that there are enforceable debts, and unenforceable debts - until the 'pubbies get their fondest wish and debtor’s prisons are re-established, there are options.
This is what my therapist does when my husband and I get stressed about money.
Repeat after me:
Money is a renewable resource.
Money is a renewable resource.
Money is a renewable resource.
You have to say that lots and LOTS, but eventually you realize that it’s true, and that while having debt is surely stressful, it is only as stressful as you let it be. You’ll make it through, really. Just hang in and hold on until you get on your feet.
And if anyone needs advice on being poor, I’m very good at it. And I mean that in a positive way–I’m broke, money is always tight-to-nonexistent, and I have a passel of kiddos to feed, so I’m good at managing my resources and getting by on very little. Just holler if you need help, empathy, or a pat on the shoulder.
Best,
karol
I had a business fail, my debts were nearly $600,000.
And that didn’t include the personal debt.
Don’t feel too bad, it could be a lot worse.
MeanOldLady,
When you are ready to get out of debt, give this book a read. Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey - and it really is just that. You have to change your thinking (and habits) but it can be done. Dave also has a website www.daveramsey.com and he is on AM radio stations around the country from 2-5 EST M-F.
I give a copy of this book to everyone I care about & recommend it anytime someone mentions money problems. It has helped me immensely. Give it a read, it can’t hurt. Good Luck!
PS - Dave Ramsey is a Christian & the book has sprinklings of biblical references but I wouldn’t let that stop you from reading it if you don’t share that viewpoint (I don’t).
 I can’t even afford that book! But like I said, I’m not sure how much I care anymore. Late fees are piling up, there’s not much I can do about it. You all have been very kind showing interest in what’s wrong with my life, but I think you all care more than I do. I cared for a few hours, but not anymore. Bills schmills.
Get it at the library My city library has it. Or, if that won’t work, e-mail me (address in profile) and I will buy the book & send it to you - I believe in it that much. Really, if you’d read it, I’d send it.
PS - On the website you can listen to his show (there are archives if he isn’t on at the time you listen).
This sounds a dreadful thing to say - but it is (almost) cheering to encounter you people who have the same problem, and who know h ow very scary it can be,. I quite lik,e Bodypoet’s idea. Might have to try that!
Well, just be thankful that you live in Palo Alto, California, which has one of the lowest costs of living anywhere in the US.
Oh, no, wait, we don’t live in Bizarro Universe, more’s the pity.
Well I’d move, but I kind of have this silly little college thing going on. So yeah…
Slainte, you’re kind but I wouldn’t want you to do that. I’ll live.
Well, at least try the library or get a copy when you do get 25 bucks. Really - I wish I had read it years ago. Good Luck to you.
I will go to the library, actually. And Thanks.
You’re Welcome.
(And after you read it & get out of debt and then become a Millionairess, remember that I like Dodge Vipers - a blue one, please)
All righty. Blue Viper it is.
