So I'm writing my dissertation....

Well, I’ve finished another highly successful day of writing. In fact, I have added zero paragraphs since this time yesterday. But it’s okay, because today was proofreading day, so at least I managed to correct a few typos and about 80 pages worth of notational inconsistency. Maybe I’ll actually finish the rest of appendix A tomorrow (I’ve been writing appendices for a couple of weeks because it’s easier than writing actually important stuff).

Couple of quick comments (I feel irrationally compelled to say many irrelevant things).

  1. I’m already regretting this entire Netscape thing, what with the SDMB and baseball season being just around the corner. I tried to quit, I swear! They should really kill my internet access at the office if they want me to be productive.

  2. Thanks for the tips, Giraffe and nogginhead. We don’t have any useful word processors around here except for Word, I regret very much to say, but as soon as I’ve managed to actually put a few references into the stupid thing, I might trundle on over and let the little old ladies read the first couple of chapters and make lots and lots of red marks. Spreading joy to all and sundry, that’s me.

  3. I know exactly what you mean, Cranky. I’ve spent much of the last 8 months working on an integral, which is not one of those things one wants to admit in public, actually. While I have something like 30 pages on it, I’ll be lucky if any of it ever sees the light even of an appendix, dammit.

  4. Monty, if you want, I’ll look around for a scythe. Might help in dealing with the committee, too. Who haven’t been a problem recently, mostly because two of them are on sabbatical this year.

  5. Karma, I’m not sure whether to admire your industry or weep that you’ve had that much time on your hands! When I was an undergrad, there were these people who were busy typing up their homework while I was still trying to find the time to start mine. But enjoy making your slides… which sounds a little funny, but eh.

  6. I’ll actually have something aside from formatting issues to deal with. But that’s okay, because doing “one-on-one research” with the old advisor while he’s taking a 3 month trip to Belfast is an acceptable reason to put off writing. Although really, if I had to name things to do while in Belfast for 3 months, physics is not exactly at the top of the list.

And everybody, thanks for the encouragement!

To be perfectly honest, I was exaggerating. I started using LaTeX while I was a research lackey over the the summer before fourth year. I’m assuming you’re not in computer science. I’m (relatively) not very into computers, but am the LaTeX go-to guy, apparently, in my grad student “worker hive”. Mostly because of my ‘research’ work (oh, and the fact that I had a dumb-dumb cryptography assignment that included writing ~60 pages of course notes in LaTeX) I type almost as quickly as I write (neatly), equations included.\

I’m going to go get back to sliding around in LaTeX. By the time I’m done I might have so much I may have to resort to… globbing.\
