A while back I answered an email ad for free info on realestate investing.
Part way through the questionair I decided this wasn’t such a good idea because of the questions asked.
I backed all the information I had given out to the start of the questionair.
I thought that was the end of it.
A couple of months later my wife asked about a charge on our credit card and I said I didn’t know anything about it.
She said well here is another from someone else for the same amount. Then she said that last month she paid that same amount from one of the same people.
I called the credit card company and they suggested I call the company and ask what the charges were.
I did so and found that both companies were one and the same.
Long story short
The 2 charges which showed up on the credit card bill seem to be dropped. nothing has been done about the money that was inadvertantly paid and we ,actually the credit card company, are fighting over getting that money back.
BTW I haven’t received the free information or any thing from them except the bills from the credit card company.
I need to call the realestate company again,4th time, about it.
Question
Can I call what they are doing fraud and threaten to call the FBI?
I know I’m best off getting a lawyer but this is just $30.00 we are talking about.
Quartz has it right.
Sounds like the credit card company already took care of this, but if they haven’t, simply call the 800 number on the credit card and dispute the charges. To prevent additional charges, they should also cancel the card and send you a new one with a different account number.
I had to do this recently due to a fraudulent charge on one of my cards (I still don’t know how someone got my card number), and it was no problem.
About getting back the money that you already paid - what does the credit card company say?
So are you out $30 or did the credit card company take the loss? I hate to tell you this but, if it’s now the credit card company’s loss and not yours then you’re out of the loop for all practical purposes. Also, the credit card company and/or bank is not going to pursue $30. If they have lots of losses with this particular suspect then they may take it farther.
The scam artist will laugh when you threaten the FBI. The FBI is overburdened with fighting terrorism, money laundering and big white collar crime, bank robbery, etc.
If you still want to pursue it, do you know where the charge was filed against your card? You might be able to file a report in their home jurisdiction.
Are you sure the charge was related to the electronic form you started filling out?

They are investigating and asked me to call merchant again.

Yeah pretty sure.It was so long ago I don’t really remember many details.
I thought backing all the info out would actually be enough.
This has been going on since our november bill.
The reason I asked about the FBI is sometning I heard on CNN. It seems there is no other jurisdiction capable of dealing with it.
First off file a WRITTEN report with all of the sordid details.
As I understand it you deleted all of the data on the form when you backed out or did you merely close the browser window? State exactly what you did. When charges were made, paid, calls made to CrCdCo, the real estate co. etc.
The more complete the details you can furnish the more likely you can recover the $30. If the CrCdCo soesn’t cooperate, cancel your cand and get a new one.
Any time you have a CrCd problem follow up the call with a writen request confirming the details, and build documentation of all calls and correspondance. The more complete the better. If you can’t convince them with facts overwhelm them with paper work with full chronological up to date details.
