My emergency brake is broken. I drive a stick shift-95 Acura Integra. If need be, will the gear hold the car? If i park it on a hill, will putting it in first be enough? i had to do it today and it seemed like the car was starting to slip. There is always some bullshit thing to worry about, it seems.
You might try reverse. Depends on the car, but reverse may be a ratio that will hold a little better.
Why not fix it? On such a new car it seems a bit odd to just leave things broken. You don’t give much info on the problem, but it could be as simple as a broken, frozen or rusted cable or simply need adjustment.
I don’t know about your acura but my nissan truck won’t stay put on a hill no matter what gear you leave it in. I’d get it fixed asap if I were you.
You will not pass inspection in some states. Not sure about NJ.
Nope, won’t pass NJ either. At least that was the case before they privatized the inspections system. I don’t know about now. It’s probably the cable, that’s the most common cause of e-brake failure. But it could also be an issue with the rear brake system (pads, shoes, calipers, depending on what type of rear brakes you have). Definitely worth getting it checked out.
Until then, on hills turn your wheels towards the curb, so if it rolls the curb will stop it.
fixing the parking/emergency brake is usually not more than replacing a single cable.
if it is more than that, then you had other brake problems to deal with anyway.
I don’t use mine much. On a slope I curb the car & put it in gear. Works fine for me. I would suggest one curbs it of course.
If the engine has decent compression and the clutch doesn’t slip, putting it in gear will keep it from rolling on some hills. As to which hills, it depends on the slope and the particular car. First and reverse are the gears that will hold it most effectively.
