So my mother was on the phone with Madonna last night.

Well, it was via Skype video conferencing. One of her home health patients is actively dying and she spent the night at his house to give the assorted family members holding vigil something resembling rest. Turns out his nephew is one of Madonna’s choreographers and she called at 2am to see how things were doing. She was chatting the family and he asked Mom if she wanted to talk with Madonna. Naturally she assumed it was a joke. It wasn’t. Apparently Madonna’s really sweat and spent like half an hour talking with different people. Mom just had to call me this morning to tell me.

She must have been exercising.

That was a nice post, but your mom probably wouldn’t want you blasting this over a public medium. As a health care provider, she has an ethical and legal obligation to not discuss her patient’s health care with strangers, even if they are the nephew of Madonna’s choreographer.

Well, I for one, think it’s pretty freakin’ cool!

It’s good to raise this issue, but I’m not sure where the ethical breach is here. Nothing in the OP identifies the patient or the nature of the ailment–Mom may not have even told alphaboi867 any details that would constitute a breach. Is it a breach for Mom to discuss patient’s HC with Madonna? Even assuming she did so (not clear from the OP) it appears the patient and family were on hand and approved. I don’t think the revelation that a celebrity called a patient is against HIPAA rules, but I’m no expert. Am I missing something?

I’m pretty sure that anyone would be hard-pressed to identify the patient’s identity by the scant details given in the OP. I don’t see a violation, unless I’m missing something.

Are you joking? A smart and determined man (like a tabloid journalist) could find out with only a little effort.

Maybe, but he wouldn’t have gotten any healthcare info from the OP, so what’s your point?

Well, if “actively dying” isn’t discussing someone’s health, I don’t know what is.

Yes, but the person who is “actively dying” is identified only as one of alphaboi867’s mother’s home health patients. There’s nothing there that’s even remotely close to violating HIPAA, or any other, regulations.

Good lord, talk about ruining the sentiment.

I think that’s very cool and its nice to hear that Madonna took the time to ease the suffering of the sick and their family.

How exactly would this journalist track down the patient’s identity? Moreover, even if the SDMB does have a contingent of tabloid journalists who’ve never outed themselves, I doubt they would put devote the time to tracking down the person who Madonna did a cool but small favor for if they could be out stalking other stars.

Closed at the request of the OP.
