So now Slate has decided to suck

And that article was written on six pages, one line per page.

Yahoo Answers just got redesigned into unusability as well. Half the links don’t work. I know, I know, it’s probably a net benefit to the internet as a whole, but I used to derive a bit of entertainment there. I doubt I’ll be back.

As a dedicated, long-time reader, I’m pretty annoyed. This new interface is crappy and disorganized. I will point out that Slate’s Android app (and I assume the iPhone app) has not been updated, and is still good. I know that not everyone wants to install an app for this, but if you are a regular reader, it’s worthwhile.

Ah, making them use the dedicated app. That’s how the site is better for mobile readers.

That may be. I was using it already.

Not me.

Attention Slate: We have this thing called a “web browser” that is really great for, you know, viewing web pages. We should not have to download additional software just for your precious little site. Neither should we have to login to your web page. Neither should we have to click past ads that block or obscure the whole screen.

Look, we get it. You need to sell ads so we can can read your content. Fine. But if you do all of those bad things, then make crappy redesigns we will go away. I haven’t clicked on your site since, whereas I used to several times a day.

Ah, is that why this is done? It’s been irritating the crap outta me lately, and I couldn’t figure out why something that should be a page long is divided needlessly into multiple pages.

Boy howdy, you weren’t kidding. It’s inexcusably awful. Even the new typeface they’re using for their text looks terrible on my screen.

Fortunately I follow most of the writers I like over there (including a couple of personal friends) either on Twitter or FB and they link to their articles. My days of just popping over there and seeing what’s new are probably over.

I hope the people responsible get the help they need.

You might want to try the “Full Slate” page. It’s still not great, but it’s better than the other home page.

Why does every site have to have such a complicated, Flash-laden, slow-loading commenting system nowadays? What’s wrong with this? (a comment system that the WPost doesn’t use anymore, naturally)

Flash isn’t the issue with the new Slate website. It’s just visually overloaded.

Bumping this thread for a relevant article.

I’ve always been pretty lukewarm on Slate, though I like Yglassias and Plait, the Bad Astronomer. But I’ve noted that I’ve visited their website less recently, because of the general unpleasantness of the experience. I haven’t bothered to put my finger on why.

Fortunately I can still access Doonesbury there with minimal headache. But I no longer peruse Phil Plait or other items of interest, because they’re harder to access and it tends to freeze my browser when I try to move around their new site. That’s my office Windows 7 browser AND my Windows 8 browser at home.

They used to have a nice little website with interesting tidbits. Now it’s not worth the bother.

For the Phil Plaitt fans, the mobile version of Slate doesn’t make it too onerous to find him: Main Menu>Blogs>Bad Astronomy.

Maybe Slate wanted to make their site suck so it was equivalent to Windows 8. I can’t find anything and the typical home button at the top left is gone.

But seriously, how does this kind of stuff get past usability testing and why do companies think it’s a good idea?

Wow, thank you. It’s actually browseable again!

Still really sucks on the iPad.

Yep, its been so long now and they are still digging their heels in, the site is an usability nightmare to navigate:(

Intuitive design…apparently not something their people understand at all. Well, I guess they’ve managed to surpass Microsoft on making something suck.
