If you are going to hedge, make excuses and add further insults without directing your apology to the proper person, I’d suggest you don’t bother.
I credit your “apology” less than the insult that spawned it.
Not accepted.

I wasn’t referring to you. Sorry for the confusion.
Pretend as you will. Your behavior would be dick no matter what your politics. The contempt you show in your posts and posting style towards people that don’t share your politics kind of sours the legitimacy of any complaint you have about anyone being partisan.
Keep your own counsel, fine, but at least tell us what your rationale was for crafting an OP designed to prevent debate on the topic you wanted to discuss.
Well then, if what I wrote wasn’t sincere enough for you, you’re hereby welcomed to blow me. No teeth allowed mind you.
Trust that’s '07 enough for you. Because the FACT stands. Your OP had NO place being in GD. As I’ve already said, you were simply being a disingenuous wingnut FUCK as you’re wont to be from time to time.
Guess this is one of those times. Thus don’t expect any further apology from moi.
Cheers. And a healthy life to boot.
Accepted with pleasure, and I’m sorry for being judgmental. This topic has gotten lots of people worked up a bit, so no worries. I think Scylla is still pissed though, so I guess it’s not a complete happy ending.
Honestly, I was desperately searching for a way to counter your insult without insulting you. After some thought, I’m not sure what’s hip these days. Douchebag and asshole are perennial favorites. Dingleberries is still understood obviously, but is definitely somewhat dated. Perhaps I’ll start a thread someday about this very issue.
I posted the argument pretty much as Limbaugh gave it, than I linked to the actual transcript so you could read it to yourself.
Millions and millions of conservative listeners had no problem understanding the argument that was actually being made. Such arguments have centuries of tradition and most schoolchildren learn the form somewhere in the sixth grade when they read “A Modest Proposal”
If you were the kind of person that commonly made nonsensical and self-contradicting arguments at face value than you might have a problem recognizing when it was done facetiously.
I will be sure and remember that when I am posting on your message board.
I’m not pissed in the least.
Y’know, where I grew up, it was considered bad form to holler for the teacher or the hall monitor at the slightest provocation. The preferred alternative was to try to deal with the other person, straight up, first.
Apparently those rules are reversed here, the way every dipshit hollers “junior modding” when you take up something with them first.
Or maybe the rules are only reversed in the minds of pathetic dipshits, because come to think of it, they’re the only ones I see hollering about junior modding.
Me too. Surprising than that your first reaction to my thread was to post a formal accusation of trolling in the pit.
If you were going to take it up with me, personally, first, you know, mano a mano the way you learned back in grade school than I suppose you could have emailed me and that would have been dealing with the other person “straight up.”
Characterizing a formal public accusation of a board violation as dealing with the other person, straight up and personal is ridiculous.
I have a theory that I would like to share with you. I’ve been here for about seven years, had some fun, learned some things, wasted some time, but if I were to leave tomorrow, there is one real truth that I will picked up here that I’ll remember forever.
I’ve known you for over seven years, too, and I mean this straight up, sincere and honest, no cutesy games or anything else.
Calling people names from the safe anonymity of the internet does nothing more than demonstrate immaturity and cowardice.
There’s a reason why grownups rarely do it in real life. In real life it often has consequences that you can safely hide from while posting under a pseudonym on the internet.
It’s also just bad form.
Put it another way. I would bet you that at Gettysdope you will not walk up to me and start calling me “dipshit,” any more than I would you, because if you did you would not be able to click and disapear you would be forced to deal with me and the consequences of your words.
I claim nothing special and am not trying to be a tough guy. I wouldn’t do it to yout there for that same reason.
So, seeing as I wouldn’t do it there with consequences, if I do it here without them than I am displaying cowardice and immaturity.
So, based on this kind of thinking I decided that I wasn’t going to call people names. It’s not nice. It’s meaningless and cowardly.
But maybe I’m mistaken and you will call me a dipshit to my face at Gettysdope.
Then we’ll see.
Or if the person making the argument were the kind of person that commonly made nonsensical and self-contradicting arguments then posters might have a problem recognizing when it was done facetiously.
I don’t know why posters just assumed Rush was being a blowhard. Where could they possibly have gotten that idea?
RIGHT, 'cause the real subject of
"A Modest Proposal for preventing the children of poor people in
Ireland, from being a burden on their parents or country, and for
making them beneficial to the publick.
by Dr. Jonathan Swift. 1729"
is not the poor people of Ireland, RIGHT?
It’s really about AGW, Swift was just ahead of his time.
CMC fnord!
Not that I give a shit anymore, for the asshole’s response only validates the anger I felt yesterday, but yes, that is exactly the point.
Autolycus,
No worries. I appreciate your kindness and will certainly keep it in mind for any future exchanges we night have.
With what I am seeing from you now, you wouldn’t get past the registration process. I just happen to be Lord Of The Rings over there.
Surely, though, neither one of us gives a damn as we obviously don’t enjoy each other’s company.
As for Frank and/or Tom, not giving you a warning, sure, puff your chest out all you want. Quite frankly, I still think they both fucked-up. But it’s still a fuck-up on their part AFAIAC. As wring said, stunts such as yours have brought the demise of other posters. Why you got a free pass is beyond me – yet, at the same time, I don’t give a shit. It’s their call and I am not exactly a whiner — here or IRL, I already have it too easy. Thus I need not complain about such a minor detail.
OTOH, and as others have said, perhaps it’s time you took a look in the mirror. The reflection you’ll see there is the source of both your demons and baseless arrogance.
Period. End of story.
As hilarious as it is to see you once again trying to play the civility card, Scylla, I must say it would be nice if I could believe you meant this sincerely and weren’t just using it as a rhetorical club to swing at posters you didn’t like.
But hey, continue looking down your nose at us from your imaginary moral high ground if that’s what floats your boat. Just don’t expect us to take you seriously, those of us who’ve witnessed your “civility” before.
Unless they have gotten it from being long-term listeners of his program than their opinions are probably not very valuable
Yes, it would be impossible to properly judge it by reading the many examples of fallacious reasoning, lying, and generally asshattery.
That’s fair. I’ve failed to live up to this standard before, though I’ve espoused it before. I still think it’s correct though, regardless of my failure.
If you’d like to judge for yourself, look at my posting history for this year. I think I’ve been pretty good.
I truly don’t have anything against RTF, either. I think it’s simply the nature of the beast that because personal insults carry no consequences, they flow easier over the internet, and become habitual.
If I look at the people that I respect here, and who’s opinions and arguments carry weight (regardless of their viewpoints) I tend to find that for the most part they don’t throw around insults as casually as those that I tend to value less.
For example, Zoe, Mr. Svinlesha, Jshore, Wring and several others that I frequently disagree with sometimes heatedly, don’t do it much.
I think I’m at my weakest when I indulge in personal insults over logical arguments.
So, I’ve been trying not to. It was one of my new year’s resolutions. Check out my posts for this year and see what you think. I haven’t been perfect but I think I’ve been pretty good.
-The kinder gentler, Scylla
Yes, it would. Particularly if they’ve been preselected and taken out of context. Generally speaking Rush Limbaugh addresses this. He says if you pretty much listen for six weeks you have a pretty good idea of his deal and schtick and will be qualified to judge it.
If you don’t then you’re not.
I didn’t judge an Inconvenient Truth until I watched it. It would not have been fair. Previous to watching it, I’d heard people picking apart excerpts, or individual statements. Had I only stuck with that I might very well have decided that the whole thing was garbage. Fortunately, I understood that you cannot judge a whole from carefully preselected portions as those portions may have been designed and selected to give you a false impression. Watching the movie, I saw this to be the case.
RTF was asking what kind of thread the GD one was with his post at #13, no reply to that, then a total dismissal of others opinions in the now unfunny attempt to follow the “Rush style of devating”. Then RTF at post #49 opens the pit thread.
Surprising what a simple check of a thread (or memory) would do.
Oh, and for all your talk of being grown up, I call bullshit, as your recent clumsy attempt to defend the Bush administration in the Plame matter in a pit thread showed, I guess certifying the intelligence of others in the most insulting way is something that you consider normal in the real world. Me, I just laugh at the silliness of the position of the insulting person, and if someone resorts to call me an idiot in real life, you bet I would laugh in contempt.
