So THAT'S why my office is so @#$@ cold all the time

My office is in a room above the garage. It’s one of those oddly shaped rooms, twice as long as it is wide, with walls that curve inwards where the roofline peaks. Nevertheless, I love it. It’s cozy (well, except when it’s freezing), with wood paneling and a great view of the woods outside.

The only bad thing about it is that it’s fookin’ cold in the winter. I close the door to the office at night, so the doggies can’t come in and wreak havoc. Inevitably, when I sit down in the morning to start working, it’s very very chilly. It eventually warms up as the heat of the house rises and enters the room, but until then I shiver.

Today, I decide to do something. I look at the thermostat. It’s cockeyed. I read a little bit about thermostats on the Web. Hmmm… seems that this type of thermostat needs to be leveled or else it doesn’t work properly. OK, fine, I can level things. I unscrew the thermostat from the wall. It falls to the ground. There’s a wire sticking out of the wall. It’s never been stripped. It’s never been hooked up.

In other words, the thermostat is there simply for decoration, as is the baseboard radiator that runs the length of the room.

:smack:

Anyone know how to hook up a thermostat?

I took out a mercury switch oone and installed a digital not long ago.

The digital was pretty clearly marked, red wire here, black wire here, and so on. I recall there seem to be 2 most common different types of hookups, one has an extra wire the other uses a jumper on the thermostat (AC maybe?).

If you haven’t had much luck before this afternoon, I’ll scan and email you the little instruction sheet I had; in case it’s of any help.
