I heard a rumor that Gendy Tartakovsky(Samurai Jack’s creator) had mentioned doing an animated version of the saga. That would be awesome considering Samurai Jack is basically a gunslinger himself, and the entire SJ series could have easily been inspired by the Dark Tower. A live action Dark Tower movie must only be directed by Peter Jackson, or perhaps Robert Rodriguez. I’m sure Frank Darabont would love the opportunity, but does he have an epic like that in him?
Viggo would be good, but I can’t see anyone but Clint Eastwood playing Roland. Can’t we just stick him in the wayback machine?
For Eddie, I think Jason Lee would be perfect. I can see him as both the strung out junkie, and the clean, tough gunslinger.
For Susannah I would go with Vivica A. Fox based on her badass performance in Kill Bill. I think she could easily swing back and forth between Detta, Odetta and Susannah.
No thoughts on Jake. No young actors seem to have those kind of chops, and Haley Joel Osment is getting too old, isn’t he? If he looks 12 or so, I can see him doing it. He’s not too squeaky clean. Remember his violent outburst scene in AI? That kid can act when he wants to.
I think Clint is a bit too old - the man’s passed 70.
There are several passages in the books showing Roland as seen through other people’s eyes. He’s described as being gaunt, weathered, leathery or hard, but at no point does anyone think of him as an old man; Eastwood can’t be described as anything but old. Even the arthritis Roland starts suffering from is described as premature, rather than expected from a man his age.
Viggo is a tall, lanky guy, and without his LotR long hair and beard he’s actually kind of scary looking. With a bit of makeup on he’ll be perfect.
Well, if it weren’t for the fact that he was a red-head with a British accent, I would say Thomas Sangster. I was immensly impressed with his abilities in Love Actually. However, by the time anything would be made, he’d probably be out of his teens.
