So, I clicked this linkat Fark today.
It’s a tale of a heroic young man who stands up to his dad in defense of his little brother. The little brother wanted to buy some toys that are ‘girl’ toys and the homophobic dad was giving him a hard time about it, even threatening to whip him if he didn’t choose different toys.
I read it. I don’t buy it. I just don’t. Call me Jaded Jan or Cynical Sylvia, but this reads as glurge to me.
Like this part…

That’s when big brother stepped in. He said to his dad, “It’s my money, it’s my gift to him. If it’s what he wants, I’m getting it for him, and if you’re going to hit anyone for it, it’s going to be me.” Dad just gave his oldest son a strong stern stare-down, and then left the store. Little brother was crying quietly. I walked over and ruffled his hair (yes, this happened all in front of me).

The fuck outta here. I don’t buy that the story went down like that. That is contrived like sumbitch. Maybe the author saw something vaguely close to this story and then she just embellished like Martha Stewart hopped up on rhinestones!
