Pope Mark II? Conveniently, it fits.
Pope 2.0
I was in Roma last week during all of the hubbub and on a whim stopped by the Vatican Info booth and got tickets to the Wednesday morning Papal Audience. It was a bit on the bizarre side of things (putting it mildly) and I mean the atmosphere not the actual event. Here it is Ash Wednesday, the kick off to lent and I believed a rather solemn, introspective day. But the roars and cheers for the pope combined with the literally competing choirs and multiple oompah bands, made it seem a bit more like Mardi Gras. The pope literally had to ask to get back to praying- it seemed to me that 80% of the crowd were excited he was leaving and the Germans were in complete denial that “their” pope was going anywhere.
It was quite the joyous festivity with lots of clapping and shouting out (“Vive la Papa! (sp?)”) which was really amusing to hear if you think about it. I kept on wondering if these people had heard the news yet.
Maybe they just wanted him to throw them some beads or plastic cups.
