Trump claimed in his March 25 Waco rally and the Fox News interview that countries in South America are emptying their prisons and institutions for people with mental illness and sending those people to the U.S., but we could find no evidence of that.

The drugs, meth, crack are everywhere in every culture, age, economic status. (And corresponding crime) It’s just pervasive.

Sure, but that’s because Canada has a far better reputation. People judge migrants not by their individual character, but by the nation or region they come from.
And, in the case of many Americans, by their skin color. 
After a hard-working Latino immigrant drives two hours to hang drywall all day at the new residential development where he works, he’s going to drive the two hours back home, shower up, eat dinner with his family, tuck his kids into bed, and then … HE’S COMING TO GET YOU!!!

I’m in rural western Pennsylvania where I mostly see white people. But the owner of a Mexican restaurant has become our friend over the years. He brings relatives/friends up and we’ve helped in small ways; giving them used furniture, appliances we upgraded, linens, surplus stuff in general.
The people I’ve met have been friendly, appreciative people. I’d welcome “swarms”.
I don’t know that anyone has had a chance to collect and analyze the data for immigration right now.

The “common wisdom” I have heard repeatedly is that most of the people who are in the USA illegally or without authorization did not sneak across the border. They arrived by legal means on a plane, a boat, or by road vehicle, then overstayed their permission to be in the country. Homeland Security says 93% of the visitors who enter the country legally also exit the country when they are supposed to. (So 7% overstay their Visas.)
I don’t know who it would be that near-magically has up-to-date demographics for the ‘swarms’ we didn’t catch so far in 2024. Maybe Pew Research will know by 2026?

I think it’s from the Goebbles playbook. Whip up fear by blaming “others” for real and imaginary problems. In this case the “others” are easily identified by skin color, accent, etc. By scapegoating immigrants the Republicans can extend blame for things to Democrats. It’s a time-honored strategy.
The closest things the world has to fascist nations are Russia, North Korea, etc. None of the South American nations are fascist- altho I am not happy with the way Argentine is going.
But nearly all are from Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras. A surprising number from China (they come on visas then overstay them).

Yep. I worked a major project on Migrant farms workers here in CA (we did NOt ask if they were here legally, that was the deal). They cam here to work on jobs Americans do not want to do. They are hard workers, and other than a tendency to drink too many cerveza on their nite off- they are also more honest that the Average American.
Study after study has shown that on average- immigrants (of all sorts) commit less crime than Citizens.

Yup. Trump said in 2018, and again just this past April, that he’d be OK with immigrants from “nice countries,” like Norway, Denmark, and Switzerland. Which are, of course, also (a) prosperous, and (b) historically populated primarily by whites.
I started a thread awhile ago asking what harm illegal immigration was causing that couldn’t be fixed by legalizing most of the immigrants. Nobody, AFAICT, could come up with much of anything. It infuriates me that nobody with any influence is challenging the baseline assumption, that illegal immigration is a crisis. It’s like outlawing pickles, then declaring a pickle crisis when people keep eating pickles.
if biden loses I want him to pardon everyone in the country “illegally” and give them a chance to get expedited citizenship before he leaves office … sort of like what Reagan did in the mid-80s…
I live in Montana, and there really are people concerned about “Mexicans” sneaking over the 545 mile wide border from Canada. But first, these “Mexicans” would have to find a way to get into Canada, which would be difficult to do by foot from Mexico. Even if they somehow did it, getting from Canada into Montana isn’t like wading across the Rio Grand. It’s a long and dangerous journey through back-country wilderness with few roads or towns along the way. It’s theoretically possible, but extremely unlikely.
However, they are more concerned about drug traffickers and illicit drugs coming into Montana through illegal immigration. There’s a serious and growing fentanyl problem here and they need someone, other then the Montanans buying the stuff, to blame for it.

I’m in Alberta, about an hour north of the Montana border. And you’re right, of course; anybody slogging through dead-flat farmer’s fields on both sides, would stand out like a sore thumb. And if they tried the mountains and wilderness–well, the grizzly bears might have something to say about that.
The Canada-US border is not as easy as it looks on a map, especially if one is unfamiliar with the territory.
Yep. true for a few months the refugees are a drain on the system. That is because by law they cant work for 90 days. Why not let them work after just 30? There, and a stroke of the pen, the 'drain" is reduced by 2/3rd.
