Yep. If the rightwingers truly cared about the issue, they would be funding the new x-ray scanners that spot the drugs. Instead, Republicans blocked the supplemental funding. Because neither the politicians nor the MAGAs give a shit about drugs coming across the border. It’s just a flimsy excuse to avoid being called the bigots they are. Why they think anyone’s fooled is beyond me.
If they did approve that funding they could then blame Biden for the 973% increase in fentanyl seizures!

Today, the majority of precursor chemicals for illicitly manufactured fentanyl come from China and are synthesized into fentanyl in Mexico. Fentanyl is then smuggled across the border into the United States.
I know that the end drug is smuggled in mostly from Mexico.

into the country through official land border crossings on the southwest border by transnational
criminal organizations. In fiscal year 2023, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized
240,000 pounds1 of drugs at the southwest land border, which included an estimated 1.1 billion
doses2 of fentanyl. Forty-four percent of total drug seizures and 99 percent of fentanyl seizures
occurred at the southwest land border.3 While transnational criminal organizations smuggle illicit
drugs into the U.S, they also illegally export currency from drug proceeds and firearms. This
illegal trade occurs at official ports of entry, alongside legitimate trade and transit, and CBP
personnel need more resources to enforce U.S. law.
The Stop Fentanyl at the Border Act would reduce the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. and crack
down on crime by providing much-needed funding, technology, and staffing increases at ports of
entry along the border. This bill would enable law enforcement officers to greatly expand
capacity for scanning vehicles and cargo to detect contraband before it enters the country, slash
access to supplies that dangerous drug cartels use to commit violence and crime, and prevent
illicit fentanyl and other drugs from entering the U.S. and harming American communities.
So, in other words- no Wall would stop it. It is hidden in normal products being brought in legally.

No, this is simply incompetence by the agency–which has a multi-billion dollar budget. The appropriation bill does not specify several thousand specific line items the money can be spent on; instead there are a limited number of categories and the administrator has a lot of discretion in how money is being spent. So if the administrator thought the screeners would be useful he would have found the money to install them–and spent less on lower priority items.
Which are? Remember- Congress is in control of the budget, and Congress is screaming about “swarms”.
Thing is, there are a lot of containers from China. It’s not practical to thoroughly inspect them all, or even a significant fraction of them. And fentanyl is extremely value-dense: You could have a fairly small package of it in with a bunch of other stuff in one shipping container, and still have the fentanyl be worth more than all the other stuff.
I’m picturing a container bursting open and swarms of swarthy people with backpacks issuing forth, like a spider egg-case.
