So, what can you tell me about Ulysses?

This isn’t for homework. Well, not real homework. My book club is reading Ulysses and I’m supposed to be to page 400 by Sunday. I just don’t think it’s going to happen. I do however get the feeling that if I understood a little bit of what I’m supposed to be getting out of this mess I could probably read it faster. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Either you should try another bookclub, or your bookclub should try another book.

Persons responding to this OP in stream of consciousness will be sent downstairs to Lynn.

Thank you.

I agree, unfortunately they put up with me when I voted for Orlando, so I must comply. I’m the only english lit person in a club full of bio-chemists. They sort of look to me as the de-facto leader of discussion, but I hated “Portrait of the Artist…” and have avoided Joyce like the plague ever since.

I honestly don’t think the woman who picked it had a clue what she was getting into.

Thanks Manhattan. I was afraid to make such a threat myself.

[‘Friends’ ripoff]Along about page 350, there’s this amazing plot twist. It turns out that Ulysses is a cyborg. The book was way ahead of its time.[/‘Friends’ ripoff]

Please don’t Phoebe me. Am I actually going to have to give those Cliff Notes people my money? I haven’t had to do that since college.

That should get you started. Happy reading!

Lots, but I don’t know what would be of most use to you. Instead, I’ll recommend James Joyce’s Ulysses by Stuart Gilbert. He’s not uniformly right, but he had Joyce’s ear and does a reasonably good job of cueing you into what’s going on.

Responses in the form of catechisms, newspaper headlines, etc. will be encouraged, I take it?

slackergirl, coincidentally, I am on p. 400 of Ulysses right now. I’m supposedly reading it with the a circle on Fathom, but my crappy (I hope you guys see this, too!) circlemates are wimping out on it. If you want to discuss this book, please email me! I would love to have someone to think about it with.

Thanks for the links, I knew you guys would come through for me. They have been a big help. I must now go do some quality reading, and Kyla, check your email if you haven’t yet.

I’m off to hurt my head with Joyce, if I’m not back in 48 hours, please send out a search party.
