So what did Edward G. Robinson whisper to Lauren Bacall?

In this scene in Key Largo? Not the characters, but the actors? Has Lauren Bacall ever discussed it? “Oh, Eddie talked about 17th C. Dutch art.”

“Can’t make the link work.”

Probably the same thing Maureen O’Hara whispered into John Wayne’s ear at the end of “The Quiet Man”. But Lauren Bacall doesn’t go that way.

I have no idea, but you’re probably right, something innocuous. She was a good actor.

“Where is your messiah now?”

Which way to the men’s room?

“If John [Huston] makes us do this scene again one more time, I’m gonna rip his tonsils out.”

I know how to whistle.

“Silly Bastard in the third. I’m telling you…!”

I was in the library and skimmed through her autobiography “By Myself”. She doesn’t really say much about Edward G Robinson except he was a good actor and had a good sense of humor. She liked the cast and really liked getting to know Lionel Barrymore’s sister Ethel. She does say that in the film Lionel defended FDR when in real life he detested him and spoke with clenched teeth. One of John Huston’s tricks.

“I have to go, but I won’t let that come between us.”

“You really should shave your pits.”

“I’m not wearing any pants.”

“Would I do this if my pal Rocky was in there?”

“Did you know that men from Bucharest all have incredibly big schlongs?”

Same thing Bill Murray whispered to Scarlett Johansson…

“Rosebud…!”

For the win.

“I told you Kim’s marriage wouldn’t last.”

“Ok, one more time, I promise. Show me how to whistle.”
