I thought that seemed very believable, myself. When the Doctor first asks her to come with her, she’s just been through quite a harrowing experience, and turns him down in favour of returning to the security of her normal life. A natural enough reaction – except that as soon as he’s gone, she regrets it: she HATES her normal life, and she’s got nothing to look forward to. So when the Doctor comes back and offers her a second chance, she jumps at it.

That’s a good way of looking at it.
Still I would have preferred a clear indication that she had thought more about her situation before completely changing her mind - perhaps a deep sigh followed by a shrug, before dumping the boyfriend.

In the Jon Pertwee episode in which the Autons first appeared, the Nestene Consciousness had taken over a plastics factory as part of its invasion plans, and was manufacturing special mannequins complete with weaponry. Presumably it’s been up to the same thing again, but since we were dropped into the story from Rose’s point of view, which seems to be about halfway through as the Doctor sees it, we don’t get to find out about that.

Aha! That explains it!
(And thanks to Futile Gesture too, although I must say that being able to mold plastic doesn’t explain a metal gun complete with gunpowder!)

I must be getting old … I no longer bother about those details, nor consider them “plot holes.” At the point we enter the story, it only matters that they’re there.

I am old :eek: but I still think there should be an effort made. Tolkien talks about ‘suspension of disbelief’, and I happily accept aliens or time travel. But a fat alien getting through a manhole is too much!

Oh glee, you’re just not playing the game, are you?

Try these on for size:

1. There may have been a much larger entrance to that area that would accommodate a vat full of Nestene Consciousness, and we just didn’t see it.

2. The Nestene may have been much smaller when it arrived, and simply grew.

3. It’s LIQUID PLASTIC. It could probably get in through the crack under the door, never mind a manhole.

See? Three perfectly plausible explanations – and that’s without even trying. Easy.

Anyone in the greater Seattle area happen to tape this?

I forgot about it yesterday until it was far too late for me to get home and set my VCR to tape it. I did manage to call my father and beg him to do so… And this morning he called back and said “good news and bad news. I couldn’t get the VCR to work, but it was a really good show and you would have liked it. I’m glad you told me about it.” :smack:

And CBC doesn’t seem to be showing re-runs.
