I realize I’m in the minority here, but I had a changing table with both babies and loved it. It’s not necessary, I’ll agree, but I found it convenient to have one place where I could have everything, including a diaper pail. If you decide not to have a changing table, think about how you’re going to store diapers, wipes, and other necessities near where you change the baby - a basket or box could do the trick, or a convenient shelf or drawer.
A midwife told us that a baby needs three things: diapers, clothes, and a carseat. Everything else, you can make do without. I think she had a very good point there. We never had, nor missed, a swing or exersaucer, and mostly used the bouncy seat as a place to put the baby when he was big enough to eat a little cereal or banana but still too small for a high chair. We did have a cradle - an “heirloom” of sorts, since it was mine - and it was nice to be able to rock a newbown to sleep. It also takes up less floor space than a crib, but it’s only usable until Baby learns to roll over, or outgrows it, whichever comes first.
The Baby Bjorn carrier was very helpful when Baby was fussy, it’s extremely comfortable for both baby and parent, and easy to adjust if you have two parents of different sizes. We had a pram/stroller combination and loved it, but if you aren’t going to be going on a lot of walks, it would be a waste of money and space. When the time comes that you want a highchair, Baby Bjorn also makes a sort of booster seat that has a belt and a bar across the front, sort of a cross between a highchair and a booster - it fits on one of your normal kitchen or dining room chairs, so it doesn’t take up much space at all.
I don’t know if this has been mentioned or not, but Mamma needs a couple of good, well-fitting nursing bras, and breast pads can be very useful during the leaky period. If you can arrange a “nursing nest” as we called it, that’s great - a comfortable place to sit, with space within arm’s reach for a drink of water, maybe a snack, and a book or a portable CD player or whatever else Mamma would like to keep her from getting bored while nursing.
Babies don’t need much room, when they come out. They’re awfully small
And Congratulations!
