My guestimate matches the $45,000 that gazpacho came up with. I find it hard to figure out how that even covers the server(s), electricity and a part time person to fix problems, upgrade software and feed the hamsters. It’s a good thing all the moderators volunteer their time to keeps things running as smoothly as they do. (I’ve glimpsed some pretty bad unmoderated boards. Yuck!)
I would expect/hope that any minimal revenue from the Google ads goes to support the main Reader organization. I pay less for my membership but get more enjoyment on the SDMB than for any of the magazines I subscribe to. In fact, I spend more on gas getting to and from work in one day than I did for SDMB membership this year. What a great deal! No complaints from me. And no, that is not rolling over or sucking up to the Mods. It is being a realist and recognizing a good thing when I’m in it.

I prefer to think of the board as Zeus or perhaps Aphrodite. Divine in inspiration and fun but prone to flaking out or being otherwise unresponsive.

You obviously don’t want the opinions of the members of the board on this one: why not just do this via email, if you’re really interested in an answer? If you’re interested in stirring up trouble, then don’t get pissy and defensive when people call you a troll.

The fact that the board can go down and come right back up with in minutes any time of day makes me think that the money is being well-spent on someone who gives a shit enough to come in and fix a stupid, non-integral message board any time of day.
Does your cable ever go out? How about your phone service? Do you ever get a dropped call phone call? I bet you pay a hell of a lot more for those services than this one. And they’re a lot more important to your life than the SDMB.
How much “documentation” do you get from them when something goes wrong?
