So what happened to the massacree idea?

I guess it wouldn’t be a good idea to mention that I really like chopped liver.

Sorry Opal.

OK now we are a veritable throng. Way Cool.

A masacree is an overwhelming defeat, involving a philosophical absurdity, with unexpected social implications. It comes from the intentional mispronunciation of massacre, as mentioned in the story of the Alice’s Restaurant Masacree. In the original song, and the movie, Arlo Guthrie sings about the absurd events leading up to his designation by the Selective Service System as morally unfit for military duty, due to his arrest for littering, and an exhortation to others to make the song an anthem for anti war activism. Since neither the arrest, nor the following consequences of the original crime were in any way related to either each other, or anti war sentiments, it seemed a good choice of name for what I intend to encourage the dopers to do.

The underlying subtext of a masacree is that if you are not doing what entrenched political forces expect of their opponents, but are obviously not in support of them, they will become confused easily, and fail to act to defend their power structure from your subtle attack. We will demonstrate. We will support our views, and our right to express those views. However, we will support whatever views each of us feels like supporting, and remain united in the face of our own disagreement. Congress will not understand. Point made.

What do they teach in the schools now days?

Well, as I said I came across the Alice’s Restaurant stuff (which I have heard about since forever but never listened to) in Googling, but it was all long and looked fairly boring so I didn’t (and haven’t, and probably won’t) read it. Blame my MTV* generation mentality if you must. I have somewhere between 20 and 30 windows open at any given time and I’m reading a lot of things at once and doing a lot of other things… and just by sheer lack of hours in the day I have to make the decision to not read long things that don’t really seem interesting.

*even though I never watch MTV

Well, one week from today, at high noon is the time.

The west side of the Capitol Building, dead center, as close as the law, and instituional paranoia will permit.

Bring a sign.

My sign will say: “Will Debate for Food.”

Yours will say whatever you want.

If you are comming, bump the thread between now and next Wednesday.

Tris

Dammit, I can’t make it. As I mentioned before, we were short-handed in the office because my boss was in the hospital, and now he’s gone and died, so things aren’t getting any slower around here anytime soon (yes, I’m aware of how horribly selfish I sound).

Short version: I can’t go. But I want to see pictures of the Dada Rally.

DAMN!!! Damn, I won’t be able to make it!

Well, damn. And I was going to go with “End Falling Rock Zone”

Oh well…maybe next year.

Bumping the thread to find out who’s going - being on the other side of the pond, I will be with you “in spirit” only…

Grim

P.S. Just noticed the smilies are back in colour
:wally :smack: :dubious:
Just because I can.

I have a dentist’s appointment. I had to reschedule it at the last minute from last week.

But it’s just as well, I guess, since my babysitter got a “real job” and can’t watch Dominic anyway.

DAMMIT! :frowning:

Well, I guess the extablisment survived our (by which I mean my) assault upon the bastions of power.

But, the struggle is not over until the last revolutionary says enough!

See you next year.

Tris

Well, shoot. Not with a bang but a whimper. Thanks for making the statement, Triskadecamus.

Aw, I am so disappointed, the first time I noticed this thread was today when the massacree would have already passed. Not that I could have joined you, being I’m several states over, but maybe I can get some of my local friends to get together to do a massacree. Tis truly a great idea Triskadecamus.

I also had to pipe in and say that Alice’s Restaurant was one of my favorite songs when I was growing up. It’s been years since I have heard the song, but I can still bring to mind what he sounds like when he says “Shrink, I wanna kill. I mean, I wanna, I wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and guts and veins in my teeth. Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill! Kill! Kill! KILL!” Made quite an impression on younger me.
