What would Uncle Sam’s response be to me? Maybe it depends if I own him, or he owes me? Somehow I don’t think it would mater either way, being only one day late.

Just to back up The Perfect Master, I can tell you from experience that nothing will happen if you mail a few days late, regardless of whether you owe, or they owe.

I can vouch for the fact that the IRS doesn’t care when you file if they owe you money. I filed for a refund well over a year late when I was in my early 20’s. They promptly sent me the check like it was business as usual and everything was accounted for the following year. I am not sure if you can stretch that into many years or decades rthough.
