One movie that a lot of nerds like Angie Dickinson in is “Pretty Maids All in a Row”, with script by Gene Roddenberry. Very sexy, but minimal nudity. (That’s a body double in “Dressed to Kill”, but most fans of hers don’t mind.)
As to Angela Lansbury, may I suggest “Something for Everyone”.
Going to IMDB and searching through their list of most popular movies of the late 60’s-early 70’s, trying to figure out which of the leading ladies got the jobs because they were hot and what they had in common, I noticed a couple things.
First, a lot of those movies had very few women in them (no, Big Bad Mama didn’t make the list; thanks for reminding me of the William Shatner scenes. The scars had just begun to heal…), and there were a lot of war movies.
Second, here’s a rough, biased list of said hot actresses:
Jane Fonda (Cat Ballou, Barbarella, Klute)
Cybill Shepherd (Last Picture Show)
Faye Dunaway (Bonnie & Clyde, Thomas Crown Affair, Three Musketeers)
Teri Garr (Young Frankenstein, Laugh-in, Close Encounters)
Dyan Cannon (Bob & Ted & Carol & Alice)
Sally Kellerman (MASH, Where No Man has Gone Before)
… I think you’re overlooking one of her main attractions: she was BLONDE.
The essence of Angie Dickinson was that she was a broad (in the good sense of the word.)
A broad could drink with the guys, shoot pool, play poker, out cuss a Marine, take a dirty joke and give back a dirtier one, ride a horse, handle a sailboat, etc.
Her association with the Rat Pack cemented that image a long time before Big Bad Mama.
To top it off, she was a good-looking’ broad.
Jackie Kennedy could ride a horse and handle a sailboat, but I trust you get the distinction.
On a meaningless tangent, “Pretty Maids All in a Row” was filmed at University High School in Los Angeles, where I went to school. I never saw the movie though.
Oh, I have another tangent. I also went to the coincidently named University Elementary School, where Angie Dickinson’s daughter Nicky Bacharach was my classmate. An odd girl. I wonder what ever happened to her.
The only movie where Angie appeared fully frontally naked was 1974’s Big Bad Mama. That was the picture that proved she’s not a natural blonde (although we knew that already).
Back in the '70s, I spent some time visiting a pen-pal in Scotland. Her dad (an RAF vet) was hooked on ***Police Woman *** (“It’s my favorite show!”), and I would sit and watch it with him in their living room (the only time I ever watched it). I swear, he damned near salivated whenever Angie was on screen!
Personally, she never did much for me. This, on the other hand, I love:
Angie played hot blondes consistently in her career, and right at the time of her Police Story and Police Woman roles she played in the naked sex fest movie Big Bad Mama.
For me, she was the sexy neighbor in Grumpy Old Men. The sequel featured another lovely lady who I think men of my father’s generation found quite attractive. I think both ladies aged incredibly well.
I’ve read my fair share of Hollywood gossip and I’ve heard it opined on a number of occasions that Angie Dickinson was the single best lay in the history of Hollywood.
Lord knows she got my father’s engine rumbling, that’s for sure. Man never missed Police Woman.
