Please remember that there are limits on what sorts of insults are allowed in the Pit. Please refrain from sexual-based insults aimed at other posters.
I’m basing it off this part of Ed’s language rules:
"fuck you and variants, e.g., go fuck yourself, fuck off and die "
I generally try to apply these rules very narrowly, but the difference between “go fuck yourself” and “go get fucked” is a thinner hair than I’m capable of splitting.
Also, Shodan’s imagery comes off as kind of rapey to me, which would also violate the rule against wishing harm or death on other posters.
Insults and unworkable suggestions aside, the underlying root of this whole problem goes back many centuries, to the time of Abraham.
God promised the land which now comprises Israel and Palestine to Abraham and his descendants forever. The Jews, as descendants of Abraham’s son Isaac, feel that the land belongs to them. The Palestinians/Arabs, as descendants of Abraham’s son Ishmael, feel that they have a valid claim.
The city of Jerusalem and the surrounding areas contain many sites which are considered holy by Judaism and Islam, and also Christianity.
One of the biggest bones of contention is the Temple Mount, or Mount Moriah. This mountain is the site where Abraham was commanded to offer his son (Isaac or Ishmael, depending on which Holy Book you subscribe to) as a sacrifice. It is also the site where Solomon built his temple, and where the Jews believe the temple will someday be rebuilt. Unfortunately for them, the Muslims came along and built the Dome of the Rock on the same site.
This one mountain is the world’s holiest spot for Jews and the second holiest (after Mecca) for Muslims. Neither group is going to be happy with a solution that involves relocating their people to Siberia, California, or anyplace else, because Jerusalem is where they belong.
There’s also not much hope of the two sides burying the hatchet and setlling their differences, because the “differences” are so deeply rooted in theology and history. For one side to grant concessions to the other is like admitting that they have been wrong for thousands of years.
Scotland is the homeland of rednecks. The subset of Americans historically categorized as “rednecks” were largely the descendants of Scottish immigrants. Saying that rednecks come from Scotland is not at all the same thing as saying that Scots are rednecks, any more than saying that the Puritans came from England is the same as saying the English were Puritans.
I’ve also read that most Jews were suspicious that Stalin was trying to put them all in one place so he could exterminate them. Joe may have really meant to give Soviet Jews their own region and leave them largely alone or he may have been planning a Soviet Holocaust. I know of no evidence that makes it clear.
Considering Jumpin Joe’s track record, I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t have trusted him! Not only was he good about giving people lands of their own, free of any sort of control or rule by the friendly Soviet Union, but it’s not like HE ever orchestrated pogroms against the Jews, or against anyone else for that matter. He was an all around good guy after all…
